One of many wildlife encounters on Kangaroo Island Echidna on Kangaroo Island		Separated from the Australian mainland about 9000 years ago, Kangaroo Island remains one of the most unspoilt natural wonders of the world. Visitors will find seals basking on quiet beaches; koalas munching on gum trees right beside the road; echidnas wandering in search of insects; and kangaroos, goannas, wallabies, penguins and birds at just about every turn. One third of the island is protected as conservation and national parks, such as the Flinders Chase National Park, which has a fabulous Visitor Centre. Half the island has never been cleared of native vegetation. There are huge weather-sculptured granite boulders at Remarkable Rocks, the snowy-white sand dunes of Little Sahara and lots of secret spots along the island's 480 kilometres of coastline, including several lighthouses. Kangaroo Island is just a 30-minute flight south from Adelaide, or less than two-and-a-half hours by car and ferry. The island has four town centres: Kingscote, Penneshaw, Parndana and American River. There's now a major sealed road right around the island, but many smaller roads are narrow, unsealed and edged with scrub. Driving by day or night, visitors should take it easy and allow for slower speeds when calculating travel times.

Uluru (Ayers Rock): The World's Biggest Monolith		Uluru (Ayers Rock), in the centre of Australia, is the world's biggest monolith at 3.6 kilometres long, two kilometres wide, 348 metres high and 9.4 kilometres round. Uluru, which belongs to the Anangu Aboriginal people, changes colour in different lights, particularly at sunrise and sunset. Uluru holds a significant place in the Anangu people's creation stories and laws, known as Tjukurpa. Many stories relate to how ancestral beings formed the rock. Walks around Uluru's base with Aboriginal guides offer a spiritual interpretation and an understanding of its history. About 32 kilometres west of Uluru are the 36 steep-sided domes of Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), Although less famous than its neighbour Uluru, Kata Tjuta holds its own as an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Sightseeing and walking tours offer opportunities for great photography. The spectacular sunsets rival those of Uluru. Kata Tjuta's Valley of the Winds is best enjoyed on foot. For the fit and experienced, a four- to five-hour walk meanders around several domes. Tatintjawiya (Olga Gorge) can be seen on a walk of about an hour.
