Byron Bay

 
   
The town is the nucleus of Byron Shire. Captain James Cook named the area Byron on 15 May 1770, after John Byron, a navigator and the grandfather of the poet Lord Byron. Cape Byron is Australia's most easterly point, located on the north coast of New South Wales. With its numerous beaches, unspoilt hinterland, Byron Bay is a popular visitor destination. The town is popular with residents from all socio-economic backgrounds and walks of life. It is famous for its laid back and alternative lifestyle. The area is also noted for its wildlife, with the whale watching industry a significant contributor to the local economy. Once a former whaling station Byron Bay is now a very popular holiday resort renowned for its magnificent surfing beaches.

With average summer temperatures of 21C – 28C, and average winter temperatures of 15C – 21C, both locals and visitors are able to enjoy plenty of outdoor activities including the many festivals throughout the year. The weekly roving markets of the Byron area are famous for their range of produce, new age funkiness and great atmosphere. There are also a number of National Parks and Reserves in the region, including Julian Rocks Marine Reserve.
