Port Macquarie

Located on the North Coast of New South Wales at the mouth of the Hastings River, Port Macquarie boasts some of the most pristine waterways and magnificent beaches in Australia. With an abundance of things to do, beautiful nature reserves, and a colorful history, Port Macquarie is a coastal resort town that has something for everyone. Enjoy uncrowded, patrolled beaches. Cruise serene rivers and waterways, at whatever speed takes your fancy. See migrating whales, pods of dolphins and koalas in their natural habitat. Make a tour in the remnant rain forests or to the historic ruins of a colonial mansion. Discover the range of local shops, markets, galleries, arts and crafts and world class wineries during your holidays. Whatever your interest, Port Macquarie has just what you need.

The European settlement of Port Macquarie was established in 1821, 3 years after John Oxley reached the region by trekking down the Hastings River from the New England area. It is one of the oldest penal settlements outside of Sydney. Many early structures still stand today, along with a range of museums. Located midway between Sydney and the Gold Coast makes the resort town an ideal overnight stop along the way.
