More than 600 islands – like a string of pearls, they grace the east coast of Queensland. Large and small islands. Wild islands and domesticated ones. Lonely paradises a la Robinson Crusoe or luxury tourist destinations. The islands of Queensland are filled with unimaginable diversity.
Some of them, for example the 74 Whitsunday Islands, were once the peaks of a mountain range. They sank into the ocean thousands of years ago. There are other unique islands, such as Fraser Island, consisting of nothing but sand. Then there are those that grew from enormous coral formations. Beautiful palm trees and tropical vegetation thrive here. Lizard, Dunk, Orpheus, Magnetic, Hayman, Hamilton and Heron Island are among the most beautiful. Holidaymakers come here to snorkel, to scuba dive, to sail or to observe turtles, sea birds, humpback whales and other rare animals in their natural habitat.
No matter which island you decide to visit, one thing is certain: You're sure to find you own personal holiday paradise in Queensland. |
