Kalbarri National Park

Kalbarri National Park was established in 1996 and is one of the most visited National parks in Western Australia covering over 186 000 hectares.

The Murchison River gorges in the Kalbarri National Park are particularly spectacular. The gorges have been carved over millions of years to form dramatic sandstone cliff faces which plummet into the Murchison River as it meanders towards the township of Kalbarri.

The spectacular scenery of Kalbarri National Park is the result of geological formation. Beneath the landscape are deep, horizontal bands of multi-colored sands which were deposited in layers some 400 million years ago. The rugged terrain and relative seclusion of the Murchison Gorge attracts thousands of visitors each year.

Short walks provide moderately easy access to lookouts along the river gorge at the Loop, Z-Bend, Hawks Head and Ross Graham lookout. For those with greater levels of fitness and experience, there are many gorge hiking options available – from one day excursions to 4 or 5 day extended hikes. Toilets and picnic facilities are provided at various places. Drinking water is not available in the park so always carry your own supply.

From July to October 800 species of wildflowers burst into bloom in a riot of color. Kalbarri township is a small popular beach resort offering a range of activities, such as kayaking, water skiing, horse-riding, tennis, golf, surfing as well as boat cruises and quad bike tours into the national park. Pelicans are fed daily on the foreshore.
