Central yet quiet: Art Nouveau hotel in Berlin
Central yet quiet: Art Nouveau hotel in Berlin

Accommodation: A turn-of-the-century residence
The hotel is a tremendous value in the heart of Berlin. Its location on a quiet, tree-lined street just off the Kurfürstendamm couldn't be better. The five-story building, built around 1900 as a private residence, has a nostalgic, old-fashioned look with ornate designs on its cream-coloured facade, tall windows, romantic balconies edged with flowerboxes, and a large tree shading the entrance. You step inside to a hallway with a black-and-white marble floor, mirrored walls, and a vaulted ceiling. The rooms are spacious and nicely furnished in a traditional style with dark wooden furniture, pastel-coloured fabrics and lace curtains. Many of the rooms face onto the quiet courtyard.

A green oasis above the rooftops of Prague
A green oasis above the rooftops of Prague

Accommodation: A log house near downtown Prague
The oldest written report of this building dates from 1739. It was first referred to by its current name, the Sign of the Crayfish, in 1779. Although there were numerous timbered houses in Prague at the time, very few have survived to the present day, making this a truly unique historical landmark. The property was in a state of desolation when acquired by its present owner, Mr. Paul, in 1987. Since then the house at the Sign of the Crayfish has been brought back to life. Natural materials were used in the restoration, giving the property a pleasant, rustic feel. The mass of greenery and rippling water in the garden has a relaxing effect. Although the building serves as a hotel today, it is a very small one that harmonizes with its surroundings.

Idyllic location: A former monastery on the Danube

Accommodation: A former monastery in Dürnstein
Richard the Lionheart, the legendary King of England, was abducted on his way home from a crusade in 1192 and held captive for a year in Dürnstein castle while his relatives desperately tried to raise the huge ransom demanded by Duke Leopold V of Austria. Today he is proudly considered the foremost of Dürstein's previous "residents". The inspiring views that he enjoyed involuntarily are now available to guests of the former monastery: the property overlooks one of the most beautiful stretches of river in Europe, in a region with a pleasant, sunny climate.

Accommodation: A B&B at Nymphenburg Palace
The attractive Neo-Renaissance villa was built in 1886 next to the Nymphenburg Palace and park, one of the most famous sites in Munich. The 17th century palace, now open to the public, has played an important role in numerous historic events. The small, family-run hotel next door prides itself on its 23 individually designed bedrooms and friendly service. Bicycles are loaned for free, for example, and tickets for the local public transportation system for the ride downtown can be purchased at the reception desk. In spite of the quiet location, Germany's largest beer garden is just minutes away. The hotel staff will gladly provide restaurant recommendations and assist with the planning of local activities. Indeed, the little inn was recently named a "Best Service Hotel" by the travel website Venere. Free parking is available.
