Accommodation: A quiet residence outside the Ring
The small hotel with 26 bedrooms is imbued with homelike atmosphere rarely found in a commercial establishment. This is not due to chance: It was the intention of owner Otto Wiesenthal from the start to provide guests with an extra measure of hospitality. Before opening his hotel in 1991, Herr Wiesenthal was in the computer business, where his unpleasant experiences with impersonal hotels inspired him to create an inn where guests are welcomed as friends. Located on a quiet side street outside the Inner Ring, the hotel is a 15-minute walk to the heart of Vienna. A staircase leads up one level to the reception area. The reception staff will gladly assist with sightseeing plans, dinner reservations and tickets for events. On the same floor there is a cozy lounge with an open fireplace, which is a popular meeting point for regular guests and local artists and musicians.

Accommodation: A hotel in the Graz old town
The Schlossberg Hotel is ideally located near the river, just a block from the pedestrian heart of Graz. The tasteful decor of this splendid small hotel is refreshing. The mood is set by the exterior, which is composed of three simple shuttered buildings, one painted French blue, one gray, and one yellow. Inside there is a small courtyard, a tiny bar, a comfortable lounge, and two cosy breakfast rooms. The owner, Dr. Marko, is a retired race-car driver. His wife used to own an antique store, and it is her taste for simple, country-style antiques that creates the ambiance. The bedrooms offer all modern conveniences yet still maintain the country feel. From the terrace on the hillside behind the hotel, reached by taking the elevator to the top floor, the view over the tiled rooftops across the river to the cathedral is spectacular. On one terrace level there is a small swimming pool.

Accommodation: A 500-year-old hotel near the Golden Roof
The hotel in downtown Innsbruck was already 200 years old when Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stayed there in 1769. The inn with the striking Renaissance façade is just a few doors down from Innsbruck's most famous landmark, the Golden Roof. The cosy rooms are decorated in the simple Tyrolean style with wood furnishings. Breakfast is served in the Tyroler Stube, an age-old dining room that has been carefully preserved and is worth seeing in its own right. All famous sites in the old town are just a stroll away.

Tucked away in a side street: A downtown hotel in Salzburg
Tucked away in a side street: A downtown hotel in Salzburg

Accommodation: A 400-year-old inn
The hotel in the heart of Salzburg offers true charm and warmth. It is tucked away in a narrow side street off the Getreidegasse, Salzburg's famous shopping street. The hotel is named for an elephant brought over the Brenner Pass in 1552 as a gift to the Emperor Maximilian II. The elephant caused such excitement that several inns along the way were renamed Elefant. The house is over 700 years old and has been documented as an inn for the past 400 years. The lobby of the hotel is appealing, with a small reception counter, a cosy group of chairs, a splendid antique desk and a harlequin-patterned marble floor accented by an Oriental carpet. There is a beautiful lounge upstairs where guests can feel at home. Because the building is so old the bedrooms naturally differ in size and shape, but all are attractively decorated in the traditional style.
