2nd day: Vienna

		Guided Tour with Gerda "You only see what you know" After a walking tour with certified guide Gerda you will know Vienna in a way that could never be accomplished on your own. The Vienna native will take you on an informative, entertaining two-hour walk through the history-laden streets of the Old Town, the former centre of the Habsburg dynasty and the powerful capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Key stops include the Hofburg Imperial Palace, the Kohlmarkt (Vienna's elegant shopping avenue), the Spanish Riding School and, of course, St. Stephan's Cathedral in the heart of the city. Unless otherwise arranged, you will be picked up at your hotel at 10 a.m.

3rd day: Graz

The Schlossberg Hotel is ideally located near the river, just a block from the pedestrian heart of Graz. The tasteful decor of this splendid small hotel is refreshing. The mood is set by the exterior, which is composed of three simple shuttered buildings, one painted French blue, one gray, and one yellow. Inside there is a small courtyard, a tiny bar, a comfortable lounge, and two cosy breakfast rooms. The owner, Dr. Marko, is a retired race-car driver. His wife used to own an antique store, and it is her taste for simple, country-style antiques that creates the ambiance. The bedrooms offer all modern conveniences yet still maintain the country feel. From the terrace on the hillside behind the hotel, reached by taking the elevator to the top floor, the view over the tiled rooftops across the river to the cathedral is spectacular. On one terrace level there is a small swimming pool.

5th day: Heiligenblut

		Along Wörthersee Distance: 300 km Travel time: 3:30 h more ... West of Klagenfurt you will pass a scenic Alpine lake called Wörthersee. The surface temperature of the lake reaches an amazing 28° C (82° F) in the summer. If you're not bothered by the crowds of tourists in Velden, you may want to stop for a walk, swim or boatride. At Villach you will head northwest and begin the climb into the mountains.

Today the 400-year-old farmhouse above Heiligenblut is a small chalet hotel that can accommodate up to 35 guests. With its heavy wooden ceiling beams in the bedrooms and open fireplace in the rustic restaurant, the property has lost none of its historic flair. The restaurant specializes in traditional Austrian cuisine. A Turkish steam bath and a fitness room are also available. Although the inn with views of the Großglockner is especially popular among winter sports enthusiasts, the calmer summer months are ideal for relaxing or hiking on the numerous marked paths in the Großglockner National Park. Those who prefer to travel by car can take a scenic drive to the Großglockner Glacier.

7th day: Bolzano

		Through the Dolomites Distance: 220 km Travel time: 4:30 h more ... The route follows one of the most beautiful stretches in the Alps. After crossing the border to Italy just past Sillian you will enter the Dolomites. A particularly scenic route is a side road Cortina d'Ampezzo, site of the 1956 Winter Olympics. It will take you to the Three Peaks of Lavaredo, the most famous formation in the Dolomites, then to Monto Cristallo and through the Misurina Pass. You will then travel through the magnificent Passo Gardena (12% incline) leading to the rugged Gardena Valley.

South Tyrolean Gothic: A castle above Eppan

The late-medieval castle is situated on a hill above the town of Eppan between Bolzano and Lake Kaltern (Lago di Caldaro). Built in 1470 and extended in 1528, the property has been owned by the Count Khuen family since 1621. The shape of the windows, doors and vaulted ceilings is typical of the Lake Gothic style in South Tyrol. The view from the castle extends across vineyards and a neighbouring Renaissance castle to the peaks of the Dolomites. Breakfast is served on the terrace or in the Knights' Hall. A swimming pool is available. Countess Khuen is a gracious and friendly host who attaches great importance to the comfort of her guests.

9th day: Innsbruck

		Via the Brenner Pass or the Ötztal Alps Distance: 250 km Travel time: 3:30 h Ötztal Valley: 220 km Travel time: 4:30 h more ... The quickest route leads through the Brenner Pass, the most important north-south connection in the Alps. Those wishing to avoid the heavy traffic on the Brenner Motorway can take a scenic detour through the Özttal Alps via Meran and the Passo del Rombo. Vast mountain meadows, deep gorges, waterfalls and glaciers lie along the route.

The hotel in downtown Innsbruck was already 200 years old when Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stayed there in 1769. 11th day: Salzburg

		Along the River Inn Distance: 180 km Travel time: 3:30 h more ... You will follow the course of the River Inn to Kufstein, then continue east on the German Alpine Road ("deutsche Alpenstraße") with its magnificent views of the Bavarian and Austrian Alps.

The hotel in the heart of Salzburg offers true charm and warmth. It is tucked away in a narrow side street off the Getreidegasse, Salzburg's famous shopping street. The hotel is named for an elephant brought over the Brenner Pass in 1552 as a gift to the Emperor Maximilian II. The elephant caused such excitement that several inns along the way were renamed Elefant. The house is over 700 years old and has been documented as an inn for the past 400 years. The lobby of the hotel is appealing, with a small reception counter, a cosy group of chairs, a splendid antique desk and a harlequin-patterned marble floor accented by an Oriental carpet. There is a beautiful lounge upstairs where guests can feel at home. Because the building is so old the bedrooms naturally differ in size and shape, but all are attractively decorated in the traditional style.

13th day: Wachau

		Through the Danube Valley Motorway: 250 km Travel time: 2:30 h Scenic route: 250 km Travel time: 4:00 h more ... After passing by the beautiful pre-Alpine lakes Attersee and Mondsee, you will reach the Danube River near Linz. The most scenic route leads along the north bank of the Danube past the Benedictine Monastery at Melk, where the church scenes in "The Name of the Rose" were filmed.

The palace in Dürnstein was built by a princess in 1632. She chose the location well: a high cliff overlooking the beautiful Danube as it winds through vineyards on the way to Vienna. Today the palace is a luxury Relaix-et-Chateaux hotel considered one of the best properties in Austria.
