Accommodation: Savuti Camp Savuti Camp is situated in an isolated part of the Linyanti Concession along the dry Savute Channel in northern Botswana. Once deep, clear and harbouring hundreds of hippos and plentiful aquatic life, the Savute Channel dried up in the 1980s due to shifts in the Linyanti Fault system. What remains is an unusual and productive ribbon of grassland that serves as a corridor and feeding ground in the surrounding woodland for a wide variety of herbivores. Savuti Camp is situated about 17 kilometres 'downstream' from the Zibadianja Lagoon - the source of the Channel; in the dry season the waterhole in front of camp is the only source of water over a large area and therefore offers excellent wildlife viewing. This intimate camp's en-suite accommodation has large walk-in tents that are raised off the ground and face onto the Savute Channel's grasslands. From the camp's thatched dining area and pub, a plunge pool and large viewing area with fire pit extend outwards on raised wooden decks towards the Channel, providing a wonderful view of the waterhole. You can explore the Channel and its environs through day and night game drives, nature walks with a guide (on request), and several well-positioned hides for safe, up-close animal viewing. Savuti Camp's 'wood-pile hide' at the waterhole in front of camp is famous for spectacular elephant viewing in the drier winter months. Game concentrations here are high, particularly in the winter dry season, and apart from abundant plains game, species such as roan and sable antelope, southern giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, spotted hyaena, black-backed jackal and wild dog may also be encountered. In winter, this area can also be excellent for the sought-after aardvark and aardwolf, which are big ticks on anyone's mammal lists! |

Accommodation: Xigera Camp Xigera Camp (pronounced Keejera) sits on an island in the heart of the Delta in Moremi Game Reserve. Xigera is set in what is truly a wetland paradise, surrounded as it is by deep channels and lush riverine vegetation. The camp consists of ten luxuriously furnished tented rooms each with en-suite facilities and an outdoor shower. Raised on wooden platforms and walkways, each tent offers superb views of the seasonal floodplain and lagoon and a feel of living in the midst of a riverine forest. Meals and evening drinks are enjoyed in the lounge, pub and dining area overlooking a permanently flowing channel or under the stars in a traditional African boma. For those hot days there is a small plunge pool in which to cool off. Guests are sometimes treated to close-up views of lions or leopards using the footbridge connecting Xigera's island to the next! The camp "newspaper" (a sand pit built into the bridge to capture paw prints) is "read" each morning and provides information on unseen nightly visitors to camp. Permanent water year-round allows an unparalleled variety of activities such as mokoro trips, guided walks, game drives and motorboat outings; being the only camp in the area ensures total privacy. A mokoro ride is mandatory at this camp. On this traditional dug-out canoe, the only sounds are the rustling of the wind through the reeds, the lapping of the water against the boat, and the call of the African Fish-Eagle. The blue of the sky is mirrored in the water, broken only by large round water lily leaves and their stunning purple and white flowers. When water levels permit, game drives are an attraction. During drier years, drives are available throughout the year, but if there has been a very high flood, drives take place only from late September to April. Xigera is a delight for birdwatchers, with Pel's Fishing-Owl, African Skimmer, Slaty Egret, Wattled Crane and a host of raptors, other waterbirds and colourful kingfishers to be seen. An abundance of wildlife includes red lechwe, lion, spotted hyaena, and leopard and the highest density of the rare sitatunga antelope in the Delta. |

Accommodation: Jack's Camp While on a trapping expedition in the Makgadikgadi Pans during the 60's, Jack Bousfield stumbled upon a site that so captured his imagination that he set up camp under an acacia with the unshakeable expectation that others would feel the same way. The choice of such a striking locale owed much to his original taste for the savage beauty of a forgotten Africa, where he lived until his tragic death in an aircraft accident in 1992. As a homage to the vision of his father, Jack's son Ralph and his partner Catherine created Jack's Camp, which was refurbished at the beginning of 2003 in traditional East African 1940's safari style. Ten green roomy and stylish canvas tents with en-suite bathrooms and indoor and outdoor showers (for those who want to feel the Kalahari breeze on their skin) have been fashioned in classical style and are set into a palm grove creating an oasis of civilization in what can be the harshest of stark environments. Persian rugs underfoot and cool cotton sheets form a striking contrast with the rugged wilderness viewed from the comfort of one's own verandah. During the wet season the landscape transforms. Clouds of flamingo and other migratory birds descend from the heavens to decorate the watery grasslands. Herds of zebra and wildebeest materialise, drawn by the lush grass, and for several months, the desert is teeming with game and predators. Guided Walks and Game drives together with Bushmen are part of the day's experiences at Jacks. A safari to Jack's Camp is also a complete desert experience focusing on species unique to the area such as aardvark, gemsbuck and springbuck. It is the only place where guests are virtually guaranteed to see the rare and elusive brown hyaena and be able to walk through the Kalahari with a gang of habituated but wild meerkats! |
