In the heart of Paris: hotel near the Louvre
In the heart of Paris: hotel near the Louvre

Accommodation: A small inn near the Louvre
This enchanting little hotel is situated in the heart of Paris, in the shadow of the Louvre. It is so close to St. Germain l'Auxerrois that you can hear the hymns from the former "King's Church" and see the Gothic windows from your bedroom. In the cellar there is an old printing press that was used to print illegal leaflets during the French Revolution. It is said that the reception area was once the Café Momus (a debating club of the revolutionaries) and it was there that Puccini allowed parts of his opera "La Boheme" to be played. Breakfast, true to Parisian custom, is served in your suite. The hotel is air conditioned. Sophie Aulnette has managed the hotel for the past 10 years and personally attends to her guests' comfort.

Accommodation: A mansion in the Médoc vineyards
The stately villa is one of the last remaining "Grandes Demeures" on the Médoc peninsula. It is located at the edge of a forest in the historical village of Vertheuil, which boasts an ancient castle, a Romanesque church and an abbey. This is wine-lovers' paradise, with numerous prestigious vineyards only a few minutes away, including St. Estèphe, Pauillac, St. Julien und Listrac. The hotel even has a small vineyard on its premises. To top it off, the sandy beaches of the Atlantic seashore are only 20 minutes away. Antique funiture and modern art: A stone house near Luchon

Accommodation: A country estate near Luchon
Located in a picturesque village, the hotel is a stone building surrounded by a large garden. The cheerful red dining room has a large fireplace and a parquet floor. The antique furniture and modern artworks give the hotel a special charm. What the host, Mme Guerre, lacks in foreign language skills is more than offset by her friendliness and hospitality.

Abundant flowers in the courtyard of the former bakery
Abundant flowers in the courtyard of the former bakery

Accommodation: An abbey bakery in Caunes
When Lois and Terry Link of San Francisco were looking for a place to retire, they chose the rural area of southern France. The journalist and the cheese buyer purchased what had been the abbey bakery in Caunes during the Middle Ages. With love and care they converted the property into a tastefully decorated bed-and-breakfast. The guesthouse is perfectly situated for a visit to Carcasonne, just 30 km away. North of Caunes is the Parc du Haute Languedoc, a beautiful chestnut tree forest with designated hiking paths. A country guesthouse serving good regional cuisine is situated just opposite the accommodation.

Simple & stylish: A room in the 15th century stone house
Simple & stylish: A room in the 15th century stone house

Accommodation: Chez Burckel de Tell
Corinne and Régis Burckel de Tell began the tremendous task of restoration soon after acquiring this stately 15th-century stone house. The building faces the main street in the centre of Calvisson, an ancient village surrounded by vineyards just west of Nimes. Corinne (an art historian) and Régis (an artist) were passionately committed to preserving the architecture and culture of the area. Ceilings were stripped back to expose original beams, floors were covered with stone slabs or terra-cotta tiles, and fireplaces were returned to working order. The couple then furnished the house with a charming rustic simplicity using country antiques and natural fabrics. In the heart of the house is a romantic courtyard garden - a true delight with flowers and greenery setting off the stone walls. Dinner is usually served here under the stars. When the weather is chilly, guests eat family-style at one large table in a wonderful room with stone walls and an arched ceiling. The bedrooms, reached by a stone-slab circular staircase, are individually furnished in the same tasteful, understated style. Régis, whose paintings line the walls throughout the house, offers week-long art classes for small groups.

sea and mountain views: villa over Vence
sea and mountain views: villa over Vence

Accommodation: a villa over Vence
La Colline de Vence, a 200-year-old villa tucked in the hills above Vence, is an absolute jewel. You will be instantly captivated by its superb setting, stunning views, pretty bedrooms, lovely swimming pool, and, most of all, by your charming young hostess, Kristin. Kristin was born in East Berlin, moving to Burgundy after she married her French husband, Frdric. They both dreamed of living near Vence and opening a bed and breakfast, so they bought an exceptionally large villa with enormous potential to use both as their own home and as a place to welcome guests. Each of the three bedrooms has its own private entrance opening off a sunny, flagstone terrace. The rooms are not especially large, but quite big enough, and each has a large window with a splendid view of the sea and mountains. They are tastefully decorated in a fresh, sweet, uncluttered style. Each is similar in decor, except for the color scheme: Amandiers is green, Orangers is a Provenal yellow, and Mimosas is a pastel lemon. Two junior suites have also been completed, Bougainvilliers in handsome reds and yellows and Oliviers in a decor of soft cream and brown. The pool is gorgeous with a beautiful setting?on a lovely terrace with a breathtaking view over the picturesque landscape of Provence.
