In the heart of Paris: hotel near the Louvre

Accommodation: A small inn near the Louvre
This enchanting little hotel is situated in the heart of Paris, in the shadow of the Louvre. It is so close to St. Germain l'Auxerrois that you can hear the hymns from the former "King's Church" and see the Gothic windows from your bedroom. In the cellar there is an old printing press that was used to print illegal leaflets during the French Revolution. It is said that the reception area was once the Café Momus (a debating club of the revolutionaries) and it was there that Puccini allowed parts of his opera "La Boheme" to be played. Breakfast, true to Parisian custom, is served in your suite. The hotel is air conditioned. Sophie Aulnette has managed the hotel for the past 10 years and personally attends to her guests' comfort. Tickets to local museums and other attractions can be purchased at a shop near the hotel.

Ivy-covered: A chateau near Tournus
Ivy-covered: A chateau near Tournus

Accommodation: A castle near Tournus
With its ivy-covered stone walls and gates covered with climbing roses, this inn almost seems like a mythical castle. It is situated in the middle of a meadow encircled by a leafy forest. The six guest rooms are individually decorated and the knight's hall is used as the guest lounge. The Roggen family, originally from Switzerland, purchased and lovingly restored the estate. Its location is perfect for exploring southern Burgundy. Tournus with its Romanesque church is nearby, as is Cluny, famous for its Abbey founded in 909. The mysticism and tranquillity of the region has always appealed to religious orders, and Taizé, home to the most important 20th century religious community, is only a short distance away. Thousands of young people from all over the world meet here every year. An excursion to Taizé is worthwhile for reasons other than participating in the daily prayers.

Artistic: A house on the city wall

Accommodation: A house on the wall of Venasque
Friendly blue shutters are the hallmark of the Maret family home, which is "enthroned" on the city wall of Venasque and is visible for kilometres around. When the artist and chef acquired the estate, which dates back to the eleventh century, it was in ruins. It is now one of the best guesthouses in the region. Guests are enthralled by the magnificent view of the Rhone Valley. Venasque, the only castle which the Pope of Avignon could escape to, is the ideal location for exploring northern Provence. Excursions can also be taken to Avignon and the ancient cities of the Rhone plains or to the mountainous region in the east. Mont Ventoux, for example, is the highest massif in Provence, while the Luberon Massif is known for its beautiful landscapes, agricultural richness and picturesque towns and villages.

Abundant flowers in the courtyard of the former bakery

Accommodation: An abbey bakery in Caunes
When Lois and Terry Link of San Francisco were looking for a place to retire, they chose the rural area of southern France. The journalist and the cheese buyer purchased what had been the abbey bakery in Caunes during the Middle Ages. With love and care they converted the property into a tastefully decorated bed-and-breakfast. The guesthouse is perfectly situated for a visit to Carcasonne, just 30 km away. North of Caunes is the Parc du Haute Languedoc, a beautiful chestnut tree forest with designated hiking paths. A country guesthouse serving good regional cuisine is situated just opposite the accommodation.

Picturesque: An old watermill near the Dordogne River

Accommodation: An old watermill
The millstone and the ditches under the house bear witness to the water-driven mill that was in use here from the sixteenth century until World War II. Hosts Stuart and Robert, attorneys from Dorset, England, purchased the property several years ago and converted the building into a small, personal guesthouse. The six (non-smoking) rooms have each been decorated in an individual style. The guests meet in a comfortable lounge with an open fireplace. Although the inn is located some distance from the main roads, the mill is ideally situated for excursions to the Dordogne area. Nearby sites include the rock paintings of Lasceau and various other historical sites along the river. A hiking area, the Grande Randonnée, is just behind the guesthouse. Bicycles are available free of charge and there are many excellent restaurants in the vicinity.

Accommodation: A castle in Amboise
Located in the heart of the Loire region, the castle in Amboise was built in 1518 by the same architect that designed the renowned Chateau de Chenonceau. The structure contains many Renaissance elements due to the fact that the architect spent much time in Italy. The castle was the residence of the Count of Nazelles and, as such, played an important role in the history of the region. It survived the French Revolution unscathed by being converted into a civic centre. After the Fructus family bought the place in 1999 it was completely renovated and modernised. Some of the spacious guest rooms have a view of Amboise Castle, which is an impressive sight when lit up at night. Bicycles are loaned free of charge.
