In the heart of Paris: hotel near the Louvre

Accommodation: A small inn near the Louvre
This enchanting little hotel is situated in the heart of Paris, in the shadow of the Louvre. It is so close to St. Germain l'Auxerrois that you can hear the hymns from the former "King's Church" and see the Gothic windows from your bedroom. In the cellar there is an old printing press that was used to print illegal leaflets during the French Revolution. It is said that the reception area was once the Café Momus (a debating club of the revolutionaries) and it was there that Puccini allowed parts of his opera "La Boheme" to be played. Breakfast, true to Parisian custom, is served in your suite. The hotel is air conditioned. Sophie Aulnette has managed the hotel for the past 10 years and personally attends to her guests' comfort.

Historical mansion in Guérande
Historical mansion in Guérande

Accommodation: An 18th century mansion
Guérande, the gate to Brittany, remains relatively unknown. The medieval city is still surrounded by a defence wall, and the moats around the wall are still filled with water. Although it lies just off the beaten path, the town has an exquisite guesthouse located in an 18th century mansion. The building has been owned by the same family for seven generations. When the current owners took over the property it was in poor condition. The French-German couple subsequently turned the dilapidated building into the jewel it is today. Both the exterior and interior have been completely restored with careful attention to detail. The fabulous garden, which extends to the city wall, completes the picture. It has won several prices and been featured in magazines.

Owned by the same family for 900 years: Château in Brittany
Owned by the same family for 900 years: Château in Brittany

Accommodation: A château near the Pointe du Raz
The enchanting château is a gorgeous stone manor house accented by white shutters, a steeply pitched slate roof, dormer windows, and a profusion of chimneys. A circular drive sweeps around to the entrance, which looks onto a lawn enclosed by three circular walls interrupted by 18th-century columns with unique Oriental motifs. The elegant decor features beamed ceilings, mellow wood panelling, and heirloom antiques. In contrast to the formal parlour, the breakfast room is a delightfully casual, cheerful room with pretty yellow walls, blue doors, blue-and-white tiles and a stone fireplace. Guests enjoy breakfast at a single large table topped by a delightful Provenal-print cloth. The bedrooms are exquisitely furnished with antiques accented by fabric-covered walls and colour-coordinated draperies and bedspreads. The garden is equally stunning: in early spring guests can admire the spectacle of 350,000 daffodils followed by thousands of azaleas and rhododendrons. Barbecues can be arranged to enable guests to grill fresh fish from the local market and enjoy dinner in the park-like grounds. Restaurants are just ten minutes away. Philippe Davy is an exceptional host and the château has been owned by his family for over 900 years.

A noble château near St. Michael

Accommodation: A château near St. Michael
This château is a true treasure. Surrounded by a vast park, it sits on the crest of a hill facing a lawn that rolls gently down to a small lake replete with white swans and a little bridge. This handsome stone mansion was built in 1763 but has roots in the 12th century. It has been owned by the same family from the beginning. The charming host, Comte de Roquefeuil, can tell fascinating stories of the château's colourful past and the role of his ancestors in various battles. The hotel's interesting interior is impeccably maintained. All of the rooms are decorated with antique furniture and family portraits line the walls. On the ground floor there is a foyer with a sweeping staircase on one side and a cosy library, a billiard room and an elegant dining room on the other. The bedrooms have the same elegant decor and are decorated with family antiques. Mont Saint Michel and the landing beaches of Normandy are nearby.
