		Accommodation: A villa in Epernay Visitors have always been attracted to the vineyards in the Champagne region of France. Epernay is the second leading city after Reims for champagne production. This small hotel with only seven guest rooms has retained its early 19th century charm and elegance. Guests are welcomed with a glass of champagne in the salon. 3rd day: Alsace

		Northeast France Distance: 400 km Travel time: 4:00 h more ... On your way through the pleasant plains of the Champagne region you will pass Verdun, the site of fierce battles between the French and German armies in 1916 that resulted in a quarter of a million deaths. The Douaumont ossuary, the largest World War I monument, contains the unidentified remains of some 130,000 soldiers who died on that battlefield.

5th day: Burgundy

		Through the gates of Burgundy Distance: 280 km Travel time: 3:00 h more ... You will leave the Rhine Valley and enter France-Comte, a hilly, forested region. The route follows the course of the River Doubs to where it flows into the Saône. The city of Besancon with its historical old town lies along the way.

The manor house has served as an inn since the 16th century and many famous people have stayed there - including Ludwig XIV. The property was fully renovated in 1986 and turned into a modern hotel. One of the towers contains a glass elevator which offers nice views of the old town. The rooms are decorated with priceless antiques. The hotel has a first-class restaurant with an excellent wine cellar. The old wine cellar, a cosy room with a low, arched stone ceiling, is used as a breakfast room when the courtyard cannot be used due to inclement weather.

7th day: Arles

		Rhone Valley Distance: 400 km Travel Time: 4:30 h more ... The Rhone Valley used to be the main trading route from Central Europe to the Mediterranean Sea, and most of the cities and villages along the way are more than 2,000 years old. You will pass through Lyon, a large city with a medieval centre. You should then see the rugged Massiv Central on your right, and if the weather is clear you will see the Alpes on your left.

The guesthouse is conveniently situated between Marseille and Arles, the Luberon, the Camargue and the Alpilles. The large estate consists mainly of olive groves and includes a swimming pool as well as areas for playing croquet and boule. 9th day: Carcassonne

		Languedoc Distance: 223 km Travel time: 2:30 h more ... leg will take you into Languedoc, the southernmost province in France. On the way you will pass the ancient city of Nimes with the nearby Pont du Gard, an aqueduct constructed by the Romans.

When Lois and Terry Link of San Francisco were looking for a place to retire, they chose the rural area of southern France. The journalist and the cheese buyer purchased what had been the abbey bakery in Caunes during the Middle Ages. With love and care they converted the property into a tastefully decorated bed-and-breakfast. The guesthouse is perfectly situated for a visit to Carcasonne, just 30 km away. North of Caunes is the Parc du Haute Languedoc, a beautiful chestnut tree forest with designated hiking paths. A country guesthouse serving good regional cuisine is situated just opposite the accommodation.

11th day: Bordeaux

		From Mediterranean France to Atlantic France Distance: 340 km Travel time: 4:00 h more ... The route passes Toulouse, the largest city in the region and the fastest growing metropolitan area in Europe. Worth a visit is St.-Sernin Basilica, an important Romanesque structure built between AD 1050 and 1200. The landscape becomes more gentle after Toulouse, a sign that you are approaching western France with its Atlantic climate.

The stately villa is one of the last remaining "Grandes Demeures" on the Médoc peninsula. 13th day: Loire

The region enjoys over 2,600 hours of sunshine per year, making it a popular tourist destination. The area around Cognac is famous for the cultivation of Ugni Blanc grapes used in the drink that bears the town's name. Some of the best grapes in France are grown near Poitiers.
