Mountains, Lakes, Neuschwanstein
The Allgäu region is considered one of the most beautiful destinations in southern Germany. Although most of the region lies in the Bavarian district of Swabia, the western section extends into the neighbouring state of Baden-Württemberg. Extended moors and forests cover the north, while the fertile southern section, sculptured by the ice age, consists of rolling green hills. In the south the Allgäu borders the majestic mountain peaks and deep valleys of the Alps. The Upper Swabian Baroque Road leads to picture-book churches and castles which harmonize wonderfully with the countryside. The area's most popular tourist attraction, Neuschwanstein Castle, is located near the city of Füssen on the eastern edge of the Allgäu.
