The "Free State" of Bavaria
The state of Bavaria in southeast Germany is the country's largest state in terms of area and second largest behind North Rhine-Westphalia in terms of population. Bavaria was independent for most of its long history, having become a part of Germany only in 1871, and still calls itself the "Free State of Bavaria" today. Known for their pride and staunch sense of independence, Bavarians are sometimes accused by residents of other states of forgetting that they are part of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Bavaria as a Tourist Destination
Although the Alps make up only a small part of the state, they are permanently associated with Bavaria in the minds of many non-Germans. The scenic landscapes along with the active preservation of traditions contribute to Bavaria's immense popularity as a tourist destination. Beer gardens and folk festivals with beer tents abound during the summer months. The largest and most famous festival in Bavaria is the Oktoberfest, which takes place not in October but at the end of September every year in the capital of Munich. Other popular vacation stops include the medieval city of Rothenburg, the fairy-tale castle Neuschwanstein and the Altmühl Valley. |
