Bavaria's Capital
Like many cities in Europe, Munich started out as a village enclosed by a wall and then gradually expanded beyond it. The old town occupies a small area which provides a sense of the original wall, the gates of which still remain. The close proximity of major sites within this area makes the city easy to visit. The River Isar flows through Munich, which is generally a very green place in spite of its size. The enormous English Garden is a park with a lake and beer garden and is well worth a visit.
Munich has a continental climate, meaning it is rather warm in the summer and quite cold in the winter. The spectacular Prealpine lakes are less than an hour's drive away to the south.
Although principally known for the Oktoberfest outside of Germany, Munich is actually the high-tech capital of Germany, where many international companies have their European headquarters. The German National Museum is the most famous of the city's numerous museums and galleries. Visitors also enjoy the beautiful baroque churches and the large selection of beer gardens.
