"Crazy Ludwig's" Fairy-Tale Castle
The fairy tale castle Neuschwanstein built by King Ludwig II is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany. Located near the city of Füssen on the edge of the Bavarian Alps, the castle's design was inspired by stage decorations used for two Wagner operas, Tannhäuser and Parzival.
The King known as "Ludwig the Mad" drowned under mysterious circumstances in Lake Starnberg in southern Bavaria before the castle's completion in 1896, soon after he had been removed from power due to insanity. Consequently, no one has ever lived in the castle. Many of its opulently decorated rooms are open to tourists, including the Throne Room and the Singers' Hall.
From the Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge), in particular, visitors have a striking view of the picturesque castle. |
