Unspoiled Wilderness
The Mecklenburg Lake District is without doubt one of Germany's most scenic regions. Foreign travelers are pleasantly surprised to discover a massive area of idyllic national parks and unspoiled wilderness virtually unknown outside of the country. Lake Müritz, part of the vast Müritz National Park, is one of Germany's largest bodies of water. The nature reserves are home to numerous endangered species, including red deer, cranes, white-tailed eagles and ospreys. Virtually inaccessible to Westerners until reunification in 1990, the former province of East Germany has since become one of the country's most popular destinations for outdoor enthusiasts.
