High Middle Ages
Most of the castles in the Rhine Valley were built during the High Middle Ages from the 11th century to the early 14th century. Although they were sometimes used as a base for the suppression of uprisings, castles generally served the purpose of protection in the absence of a strong central authority to uphold the peace in central Europe.
Construction
Whereas the right to build a castle was originally granted by the emperor, this right was gradually assumed by territorial rulers. The structures were often built without a blueprint based merely on a rough sketch in the sand. The inhabitants of the surrounding areas were compelled to help with the construction. In return they were offered protection from invaders.
Decline
After the decline of the age of chivalry the castles were increasingly occupied by robber barons. The invention of the canon in the 14th century spelled the end of castle fortresses. Some were destroyed but most were simply left to decay.
