Accommodation: A 14th century palace brewery The old palace brewery is located on the shore of idyllic Mattsee lake, only 21 km from Salzburg. The little town of Mattsee is enclosed by lakes on three sides. The traditional, pleasant hotel, which sits directly on the waterfront, is particularly known for its restaurant featuring fish from the hotel's own pond, complemented by wines from its well-stocked cellar. Guests can make day trips to Salzburg or enjoy any number of water sports, including swimming in the indoor pool or the lake. The hostess, Frau Iglhauser, proudly maintains an atmosphere of old-fashioned Austrian hospitality and comfort. |

Accommodation: A downtown hotel The young host, Giuliano Dall'Agnola, managed a hotel on the Lido for ten years before deciding to open his own place in a historic 5th-century building. The building needed total renovation, but Giuliano was wise in his choice of location - it's perfect, tucked away in a tiny side street just a few steps from Piazza San Marco. One shouldn't be put off by the exterior: the hotel is an unimpressive grey building with a nondescript door. The entry hall is quite simple as well, with a check-in desk and a staircase leading to the upper floors. But here's where the guests are in for a surprise: the rooms, decorated by Marcella, are extremely attractive and offer great comfort in the heart of Venice. All the walls are covered in fabric and enhanced by colour-coordinated draperies and bedspreads, while Venetian-style furnishings, including painted headboards and Murano glass chandeliers, complete the appealing ambiance. The amenities also far outshine what one would expect from a budget hotel. The quiet rooms are air-conditioned, have direct-dial phones, mini bars, televisions, and well-equipped, modern bathrooms. All of the rooms are pleasant, some with views overlooking a small square. What makes this intimate hotel so special is the care provided by its owners, who pamper guests like friends visiting their home. |

Accommodation: A Renaissance Villa The sixteenth century villa with a beautiful garden is surrounded by olive groves, vines, rows of cypress trees and ochre-coloured farmhouses - all this just twenty minutes from Florence and a little more than thirty from Siena. The Poggiale is more like a private house than a hotel: a Tuscan villa with its family antiques, an elegant but very warm ambiance, spacious and quiet bedrooms, lavish breakfasts. The latter feature a large buffet that includes Tuscan specialities such as fresh ricotta cheese, the local focaccia bread, prosciutto and home-made brioche. Whereas the loggia looks out onto a formal garden, the swimming pool is located in an olive grove. All the bedrooms are spacious - most are even enormous - some have frescoed walls and ceilings, and a couple of them have a fireplace. Each room has its own refrigerator, computer outlet, safe, air conditioning, an electric kettle and a tea and coffee tray. The view is of the garden, the olive grove or the central courtyard with the old well and fragrant creeping vines. The bathrooms have been decorated with thorough attention to detail, each with handmade tiles and some with original frescoes. Getting to Florence from the hotel is quite easy: guests can drive into the city and park at the train station, drive to a large park & ride parking lot just outside of Florence and take the tram into town, or take the bus to Florence from a stop two miles from the hotel. |

Accommodation: A hotel in the heart of Old Rome This centuries-old building is located in the city centre, between the Spanish steps and the Via Veneto. Marco and Guilia, the enterprising proprietors who have roots in the hotel business, have completely restored the property and now offer modern, comfortable accommodation in a historical building. Marco can suggest the best sites to see - he is an accredited Rome tour guide. The building offers many practical conveniences. An elevator takes guests to the air-conditioned rooms on the three upper stories. The upstairs rooms have a view extending over the roofs of the old city to the dome of St Peters. You're guaranteed a good night's rest here (a valuable commodity in Rome), as the guesthouse is next door to a convent! |

Accommodation: A castle near Siena The fortified settlement from the 13th century is nestled in a forest a few kilometres southwest of Siena. Situated on a pilgrims' road leading from Canterbury to Rome via France, Germany and Switzerland, it was used as a hostel from the beginning. It is almost a miracle that it has survived the many wars that have been fought in the region. The tower and the small stone buildings have been restored under the watchful eyes of archaeologists. The comfortable hotel remains emblematic of the Middle Ages - despite such modern amenities as a swimming pool and a tennis court. |

Accommodation: a lakeside hotel The Ticino-style patrician residence facing Lago Maggiore is smartly decked out in soft yellow with crisp white shutters. Its tables and chairs flow out to the lakeside promenade, creating a pleasing scene. People taking a stroll stop to enjoy a cup of coffee or some ice cream while leisurely watching the ferries glide in and out. The hotel's inner courtyard (crowned by a glass ceiling for protection against inclement weather) has tables set among many potted plants, which makes it seem like you are dining in a garden. The bedrooms are located on various levels, and finding your room is almost a game. The vary in decor, views and size. |
