General Information
Germany's easternmost state borders on Poland and the Czech Republic. Saxony has existed as a historical region since the Middle Ages, although not always within its current boundaries. The state was dissolved by the East German government in 1952 but re-established following German reunification in 1990. The state capital and principal city of the province with around 4.2 million inhabitants is Dresden.
Tourism
Although Saxony is little known as a vacation destination outside of Germany, the Baroque city of Dresden has seen a rapid growth in tourism since the fall of East Germany. Rising numbers of international travelers are also visiting the second largest city in Saxony, Leipzig, and many are surprised to discover that Saxony much to offer in the way of scenic landscapes, particularly the Zittau Mountains (part of the Lusatian mountain chain) and the Ore Mountains, both of which extend into the Czech Republic. |
