From the River Spree to the River Moselle

It has remained a well-kept secret that the Moselle is one of Germany’s most beautiful rivers. On your trek across the country from Berlin you will stop in Dresden, the "Florence of the North", and the famous medieval town of Rothenburg.   4 3 2 1   8 days

Central yet quiet: Art Nouveau hotel in Berlin
Central yet quiet: Art Nouveau hotel in Berlin

Accommodation: A turn-of-the-century residence
The hotel is a tremendous value in the heart of Berlin. Its location on a quiet, tree-lined street just off the Kurfürstendamm couldn't be better. The five-story building, built around 1900 as a private residence, has a nostalgic, old-fashioned look with ornate designs on its cream-coloured facade, tall windows, romantic balconies edged with flowerboxes, and a large tree shading the entrance. You step inside to a hallway with a black-and-white marble floor, mirrored walls, and a vaulted ceiling. The rooms are spacious and nicely furnished in a traditional style with dark wooden furniture, pastel-coloured fabrics and lace curtains. Many of the rooms face onto the quiet courtyard.

A historical inn near the centre of Rothenburg

Accommodation: A quaint 16th century inn
This romantic little inn dating from 1534 combines history, charm and an excellent location. Just two blocks from the central market square, the Kloster-Stüble is tucked away on a quiet side street behind an old church and has pretty views of the surrounding countryside from many of the rooms. Behind the hotel is the Castle Garden, a quiet park that offers a unique view of the town. The rooms are somewhat snug but comfortably furnished in the rustic style. A large apartment, set under the eaves, is perfect for families or longer stays. The cosy restaurant serves hearty, regional cuisine. After dinner we recommend taking the Night Watchman's Tour of Rothenburg. The hotel staff can provide the exact time and location.

An inn since 1640: Family-run hotel on the River Moselle

Accommodation: A half-timbered house built in 1640
The building constructed in the traditional half-timbered style stands in the quaint village of Bernkastel on the River Moselle. The 17 lovingly decorated rooms are named after fairy-tale characters like Rapunzel and Snow White. A spa area offers everything from rose-petal baths for two to candle-lit whirlpool evenings replete with sparkling wine. The romantic hotel was named host of the year in 2007 by the regional tourist association, one of numerous awards bestowed upon the accommodation for both its exceptional hospitality and its superb restaurant. The village of Bernkastel features an impressive array of half-timbered buildings on its picturesque market square.
