Bavaria Tour: Traditional Germany

North of Munich you will pass Ingolstadt, a place known to automobile enthusiasts as the headquarters of the Audie Corporation. At Nuremberg the route turns west. The former "Free City" crowned by the Imperial Castle is worth a visit.Romantic Road: The route first leads west Augsburg, then north to Nördlingen and Dinkelsbühl. Rothenburg, Nördlingen and Dinkelsbühl are the only three towns in Germany with fully intact medieval city walls.

A worthwhile detour if time allows is a trip down the "Romantic Road" (Romantische Straße) to Dinkelsbühl, an enchanting town surrounded by medieval walls and towers. A little further south you will pass Ulm, which boasts the world's tallest church, Ulm Cathedral. The famous castle built by Ludwig II, Neuschwanstein, is close to the town of Füssen.

The most scenic route connects with the German Alpine Road at Gmund on the north shore of Tegernsee. From there the route leads southwest around the shore of Schliersee and up into the Alps around Bayrischzell. From the nearby town of Osterhofen a cable car can be taken to the peak of Mount Wendelstein (1,838 m, 6,000 ft) for breathtaking views of the Bavarian Alps. If time allows the best route is via the German Alpine Road ("deutsche Alpenstraße") with its magnificent views of the Bavarian and Austrian Alps. The route leads along side roads parallel to the Austrian border all the way from Garmisch to Chiemsee.

The short stretch leads out of the foothills of the Alps to Bavaria's capital.
