5th day: Loch Ness

The highlight of the scenic drive through the Grampian Mountains is Blair Castle, one of the most striking castles on the island. A Whisky Trail was created in the region to connect the numerous malt whisky distilleries.

The mansion completed in 1621 by the eighth Lord Lovat for his wife Lady Jane is surrounded by 20 acres of landscaped gardens that are home to red squirrels, roe deer, owls, buzzards and other animals. The award-winning restaurant of Chef Walter Walker is considered one of the best in Scotland. Many of the fresh ingredients used are grown in the hotel's own gardens. The heart and oldest part of the house is the wood-panelled drawing room, where log fires burn on cold days. 7th day: Fort William

		Through the Great Glen Fault Distance: 80 miles Travel time: 1:30 h more ... You will travel through the fascinating Great Glen Fault, which bisects Scotland from north to south. To the right lie the remote Highlands of Wester Ross, and to the left the Grampian Mountains.

Nestled in the foothills of the mighty Ben Nevis, Inverlochy Castle sits amid some of Scotland's finest scenery. Inverlochy was built in 1863 by the first Lord Abinger near the site of the original 13th century fortress. In September 1873 during a trip to Balmoral, Queen Victoria spent a week at Inverlochy sketching and painting. In her diary she wrote, 'I never saw a lovelier or more romantic spot'. Inverlochy had been a private residence for over a hundred years until 1969 when it was converted from a family home into Scotland's finest country house hotel. Boat rides or mountain bike excursions are arranged upon request. The small Highlands town of Fort William is only three miles away.

9th day: Edinburgh

		Fjords, mountains, valleys Distance: 200 miles Travel time: 4:30 h more ... If time allows you should take a detour via Oban and the Argyll highlands north of Glasgow. You will travel along narrow roads with staggering views of fjords, islands and the sea. The route then leads around Loch Lomond, one of the most beautiful lakes in Scotland, to Glasgow and continues across the lowlands to Edinburgh.
