		You arrive at the airport in Edinburgh.

		To the High Country Distance: 124 miles Travel time: 3:30 h more ... After travelling through the sparsely populated lowlands you will enter the high country near Sterling. The wooded hills of the Trossachs and Ben More, the highest point in the Crianlarich Hills, lie along the route. A panoramic stretch around the edges of Loch Awe and Loch Etive begins at Dalmally.

3rd day: Skye

		Road of the Isles By land: 80 miles Travel time: 2:00 h more ... The drive from Oban to Mallaig is one of the most scenic stretches in Great Britain. You will pass Ben Nevis, the highest mountain on the British Isles, then Loch Shiel, at the northern end of which a monument commemorates the Scottish clansmen who fought the English in 1745 to restore the exiled Stuarts to the throne. The ferry to Skye leaves from Mallaig. The island can also be reached via a toll-free bridge near Kyle of Lochalsh.

6th day: Ullapool

		Along the rugged coast Distance: 180 miles Travel time: 4:30 more ... You will leave the island over the bridge to Kyle of Lochalsh and travel northwards to more and more remote areas on increasingly narrow roads. Just when it appears the scenery couldn't get any better you will suddenly encounter Inverewe Gardens, a park with subtropical flora created by a Scottish aristocrat in the late 19th century.

8th day: Wick

The former hunting lodge set in 20 acres of woodlands is located in the County of Caithness on the northeast coast, which is known for its diverse landscapes. The property is just a 30-minute drive from Gills, the point where ships leave for the Orkney Islands. During the 19th century the estate was the home of the aristocratic Innes family, whose crests line the walls in the hallway. The elegant Victorian mansion is now a B&B with four en-suite rooms decorated with antiques. Meals are made largely from fresh ingredients grown onsite and feature local game or fish.

10th day: Loch Ness-Forres

		Along the eastern coast Distance: 140 miles Travel time: 3:30 h more ... The route leads southeastwards long the panoramic coastline past Helmsdale and Dunrobin Castle with its massive square keep (central tower) dating back to the 13th century. The castle grounds with their scenic views of the North Sea are a nice place to take a walk.

While the 19th century church building is still surrounded by fields of grain, no church services have been held there for many years. The property was used as a storage place for potatoes until it was converted into one of Scotland's most original guesthouses. Upon entering the "church" visitors stand before a stately staircase leading to a gallery and a large hexagonal room. The area where sermons were once held is now a lounge lit by the awe-inspiring stained glass window. All rooms are comfortably and tastefully furnished and even have private bathrooms - an amazing architectural feat!

12th day: Aberdeenshire-Dinnet

		Whisky Trail Distance: 80 miles Travel time: 2:00 h more ... The route largely follows the Malt Whisky Trail. The Glen Grant Distillery near Rothes offers tours. Several other distilleries near Dufftown are also open to the public for tours and purchases. The route then joins the Castle Trail, which leads past several imposing structures built over a period of 700 years.

Victoran majesty: A royal hunting lodge near Aberdeen

The lane of linden trees leading to the Victorian mansion on the banks of the River Dee is over a mile long. The former "shooting lodge" has been owned by the same family since it was built in 1896. After being welcomed with Scottish shortbread in the entrance hall, guests enter the morning room containing a table large enough to accommodate 22 people. Most of the rooms offer views of various bodies of water on the property's extensive grounds. Sabrina, the amiable host, is also an excellent cook who likes to use home-grown produce from the estate's farm. Specialities of the house include pheasant, wild duck and lamb. The Dinnet National Nature Reserve, an ideal place for extended walks through the moorland, and Balmoral Castle, the summer residence of the Queen, are among the nearby sites.
