Accommodation: A castle near Arbroath The oldest part of the listed landmark is the tower, which stems from the 13th century. The great hall with its magnificent ceiling was built around 1500. A particularly interesting feature of the building, believed to be the second oldest permanently inhabited castle in Scotland, is the massive fireplace in the Tudor kitchen. Owners Kirstin and Adrian have done an excellent job of revitalizing the property without sacrificing its historical character. Lunan Bay, which boasts one of Scotland's best beaches, is just a few steps away. Breakfast is made of fresh produce taken from the estate's own garden. It is interesting to note that this castle was the model for "Knockwinnoch" in the novel "The Antiquary" by Sir Walter Scott. |

Accommodation: A Victorian hunting lodge The lane of linden trees leading to the Victorian mansion on the banks of the River Dee is over a mile long. The former "shooting lodge" has been owned by the same family since it was built in 1896. After being welcomed with Scottish shortbread in the entrance hall, guests enter the morning room containing a table large enough to accommodate 22 people. Most of the rooms offer views of various bodies of water on the property's extensive grounds. Sabrina, the amiable host, is also an excellent cook who likes to use home-grown produce from the estate's farm. Specialities of the house include pheasant, wild duck and lamb. The Dinnet National Nature Reserve, an ideal place for extended walks through the moorland, and Balmoral Castle, the summer residence of the Queen, are among the nearby sites. |
