Listed historical building: A Georgian mansion in New Town

Accommodation: A Georgian mansion
The accommodation is located in New Town, a section of central Edinburgh built in the early 1800s for the city's growing upper class and famous for its stately neo-classical architecture. The elegant residence is a listed historical building that has been owned from the start by the Macpherson family, whose portraits line the walls. The host, Mrs. Macpherson, has written several cook books, so guests can look forward to an excellent breakfast. The spacious rooms are furnished with antiques from the family collection and have en-suite bathrooms.

Views of the Isle of Mull: A B&B near Oban

Accommodation: A house by the sea
Despite its secluded location on the coast north of Oban, the Edwardian mansion is an ideal base for exploring the Western Highlands. The bedrooms with their stunning views of the Isle of Mull or the mountains are simply yet comfortably furnished - a rarity on the British isles. A special delight are the Scottish breakfasts featuring smoked salmon or haddock in place of the usual ham and eggs. Host Suzanne is glad to offer suggestions for activities such as island tours, hillwalking, kayaking, sailing and diving.

Accommodation: A former church
While the 19th century church building is still surrounded by fields of grain, no church services have been held there for many years. The property was used as a storage place for potatoes until it was converted into one of Scotland's most original guesthouses. Upon entering the "church" visitors stand before a stately staircase leading to a gallery and a large hexagonal room. The area where sermons were once held is now a lounge lit by the awe-inspiring stained glass window. All rooms are comfortably and tastefully furnished and even have private bathrooms - an amazing architectural feat!

Victoran majesty: A royal hunting lodge near Aberdeen

Accommodation: A Victorian hunting lodge
The lane of linden trees leading to the Victorian mansion on the banks of the River Dee is over a mile long. The former "shooting lodge" has been owned by the same family since it was built in 1896. After being welcomed with Scottish shortbread in the entrance hall, guests enter the morning room containing a table large enough to accommodate 22 people. Most of the rooms offer views of various bodies of water on the property's extensive grounds. Sabrina, the amiable host, is also an excellent cook who likes to use home-grown produce from the estate's farm. Specialities of the house include pheasant, wild duck and lamb. The Dinnet National Nature Reserve, an ideal place for extended walks through the moorland, and Balmoral Castle, the summer residence of the Queen, are among the nearby sites.
