Accommodation: A palazzo in Pietrasanta The noble palazzo sits in the centre of Pietrasanta, a Renaissance village between Lucca and the quarries of Carrara, where Michelangelo obtained the marble used in many of his famous works, such as the statue of David in Florence. Once the residence of a rich merchant, the palazzo reflects the wealth and splendor of a town which for centuries has been considered one of the world's best sources of marble. Not surprisingly, the bathrooms in the residence are made of Carrara marble, as are many floors and the fireplace in the main living room. The stately building is surrounding by an Italian garden with symmetrical flower beds. In a small enclave protected by ivy-covered walls is a swimming pool with a sun deck. Accommodation: Pardini's summer villa The private villa situated in a remote national park has served as a guesthouse since the 1950s. The house standing directly above the bay of Cala degli Alberi can only be reached by boat from Porto Giglio or a narrow mule path. The noise and commotion of the cities is far, far away. Guests can relax in the pleasant garden or on the beach. Classes are offered in watercolour painting and pottery in addition to such activities as boat excursions and donkey rides. The whitewashed bedrooms are simply but tastefully appointed. Most rooms have sea views. A seafood dinner made of fresh ingredients produced on local farms is recommended. |
