Milan's shopping district: Galeria Vittorio Emmanuele I

This city at the foot of the Alps, which was founded by Etruscans in 600 B.C. and conquered by the Romans in 222 A.D., is more than just the main city of Lombardy. The second largest city in Italy after Rome is one of the world's leading commercial and financial centres. The Milan opera, La Scala, is located in a classical 18th century building and enjoys worldwide renown. Several historical buildings can be found in the city centre. The most important of these is the world's largest Gothic cathedral, which took nearly 200 years to build starting in 1375 and holds 40,000 people. Close by is Milan's shopping district with its famous fashion designers and cosy cafés.

Cinque Terre, which means "five lands", is the name of the section of the Riviera west of La Spezia. The region is famous for its extraordinary landscapes: cliffs and vineyards reaching down to the sea alternate with pristine ravines and picturesque villages. This section of the Levantine Riviera has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

4th day: Bologna

La grassa, la dotta, la rossa: Bologna

Initially called Felsina (approx. 534 BC), Bologna was founded by the Etruscans in an area previously long inhabited by the Villanovians, a people of farmers and shepherds. In 88 BC the city became a municipium: it had a rectilinear street plan with six cardi and eight decumani (intersecting streets) which are still used today. During the Roman Empire Bologna had 10,000 inhabitants with various temples, baths, theatres and an arena. After a long decline Bologna was reborn in the 5th century AD under the bishop Petronius. In 1088 the Studio was founded, now the oldest university in Europe, whose students included Dante, Boccaccio and Petrarca. In the 12th century the expanding city needed a new ring of walls, which were completed in the the 14th century. Over the centuries, Bologna has acquired many nicknames: "Bologna the learned" ("Bologna la dotta") is a reference to its famous university; "Bologna the fat" ("Bologna la grassa") refers to its cuisine; and Bologna the red ("Bologna la rossa") alludes to the supposed political bias of its citizenry. Bologna is renowned for its culinary tradition and is regarded by some as the food capital of Italy. Situated in the fertile Po River Valley, the city's rich local cuisine consists largely of meats and cheeses. As in all of Emilia Romagna, the production of cured pork meats, such as prosciutto, mortadella and salame, is an important part of the local food industry. Notable nearby vineyards include Pignoletto dei Colli Bolognesi, Lambrusco di Modena and Sangiovese di Romagna.

6th day: Verona

Romantic old town: Verona

The city at the south end of the Brenner Pass lies on a bend of the River Adige and is regarded as one of the most striking cities in northern Italy. The annual wine show called Vinitaly, the open-air operas and the numerous historical attractions make Verona a popular tourist destination. The provincial capital was important even during Roman times, as evidenced by the huge amphitheatre and the massive city walls. Among many other things, Verona is associated with Dante and Romeo and Juliet. The old town with its splendid squares lined with Renaissance palazzi, such as the Piazza dell'Erbe and Piazza dei Signori, is particularly picturesque.

8th day: Lake Como

Playground of the rich and famous: Lake Como

Scenic Lake Como, like its neighbours Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore, was created by glaciers about 10,000 years ago. The Lake forms an upside down Y with the cities of Como and Lecco at the two points and Bellagio at the tip of the triangle. The mountainous area between the branches of the Y is called the Larian Triangle and is the location of Canzo, the seat of the association of municipalities that represents the inhabitants of the area. With its shimmering greenish blue waters, magnificent Alpine frame and picture-book villages lining the shore, Lake Como has long been famous for its sublime beauty. Accordingly, visitors must expect a large number of tourists, both Italian and foreign.
