Venetian elegance: Downtown hotel
Venetian elegance: Downtown hotel

Accommodation: A downtown hotel
The young host, Giuliano Dall'Agnola, managed a hotel on the Lido for ten years before deciding to open his own place in a historic 5th-century building. The building needed total renovation, but Giuliano was wise in his choice of location - it's perfect, tucked away in a tiny side street just a few steps from Piazza San Marco. One shouldn't be put off by the exterior: the hotel is an unimpressive grey building with a nondescript door. The entry hall is quite simple as well, with a check-in desk and a staircase leading to the upper floors. But here's where the guests are in for a surprise: the rooms, decorated by Marcella, are extremely attractive and offer great comfort in the heart of Venice. All the walls are covered in fabric and enhanced by colour-coordinated draperies and bedspreads, while Venetian-style furnishings, including painted headboards and Murano glass chandeliers, complete the appealing ambiance. The amenities also far outshine what one would expect from a budget hotel. The quiet rooms are air-conditioned, have direct-dial phones, mini bars, televisions, and well-equipped, modern bathrooms. All of the rooms are pleasant, some with views overlooking a small square. What makes this intimate hotel so special is the care provided by its owners, who pamper guests like friends visiting their home.

Accommodation: A 15th century manor house
The villa is a renovated 15th century manor house set on the green hillside that slopes steeply down to Lake Garda. The sensational views will make your stay unforgettable. The well-appointed rooms contain a delicate blend of works of art and antique furniture. The stone house stands in a magnificent park called "The Garden of the Senses", where both body and mind can relax. The 80,000 square metre park contains lush vegetation, broken here and there by natural water falls and gently shaded paths. A succession of small clearings, fruit tress, ornamental shrubs, flowers and aromatic herb gardens conveys a sense of peace and well-being.

Accommodation: A palazzo in Pietrasanta
The noble palazzo sits in the centre of Pietrasanta, a Renaissance village between Lucca and the quarries of Carrara, where Michelangelo obtained the marble used in many of his famous works, such as the statue of David in Florence. Once the residence of a rich merchant, the palazzo reflects the wealth and splendor of a town which for centuries has been considered one of the world's best sources of marble. Not surprisingly, the bathrooms in the residence are made of Carrara marble, as are many floors and the fireplace in the main living room.

The stately building is surrounding by an Italian garden with symmetrical flower beds. In a small enclave protected by ivy-covered walls is a swimming pool with a sun deck. The two English-speaking hosts provide an excellent breakfast and can offer any number of suggestions for day trips and activities, such as wine-tasting sessions. Marina die Pietrasanta, a famous seaside resort with excellent beaches, is just a 10-minute drive away.

Country elegance: A Renaissance Villa
Country elegance: A Renaissance Villa

Accommodation: A Renaissance Villa
The sixteenth century villa with a beautiful garden is surrounded by olive groves, vines, rows of cypress trees and ochre-coloured farmhouses - all this just twenty minutes from Florence and a little more than thirty from Siena. The Poggiale is more like a private house than a hotel: a Tuscan villa with its family antiques, an elegant but very warm ambiance, spacious and quiet bedrooms, lavish breakfasts. The latter feature a large buffet that includes Tuscan specialities such as fresh ricotta cheese, the local focaccia bread, prosciutto and home-made brioche. Whereas the loggia looks out onto a formal garden, the swimming pool is located in an olive grove. All the bedrooms are spacious - most are even enormous - some have frescoed walls and ceilings, and a couple of them have a fireplace. Each room has its own refrigerator, computer outlet, safe, air conditioning, an electric kettle and a tea and coffee tray. The view is of the garden, the olive grove or the central courtyard with the old well and fragrant creeping vines. The bathrooms have been decorated with thorough attention to detail, each with handmade tiles and some with original frescoes.

Getting to Florence from the hotel is quite easy: guests can drive into the city and park at the train station, drive to a large park & ride parking lot just outside of Florence and take the tram into town, or take the bus to Florence from a stop two miles from the hotel.

A cypress alley will lead you to 800 acres of majestic hill country in Dievole, a private Chianti Classico estate near Vagliagli, where you can enjoy Italian nature, art, fashion and La Dolce Vita. Siena is only eight miles south of Dievole and Firenze just forty miles north.

Dievole, once home to Florence's nobility, is now one of the most elegant guesthouses on a working wine estate in Tuscany. Here some of Italy's best and most famous wine is produced. Guests are either accommodated in the sixteenth century Villa, the private guesthouse Casa Dievolino or rooms with a kitchenette in Casa Olivo.

Accommodation: A hotel in the heart of Old Rome
This centuries-old building is located in the city centre, between the Spanish steps and the Via Veneto. Marco and Guilia, the enterprising proprietors who have roots in the hotel business, have completely restored the property and now offer modern, comfortable accommodation in a historical building. Marco can suggest the best sites to see - he is an accredited Rome tour guide. The building offers many practical conveniences. An elevator takes guests to the air-conditioned rooms on the three upper stories. The upstairs suites have a view extending over the roofs of the old city to the dome of St Peters. You're guaranteed a good night's rest here (a valuable commodity in Rome), as the guesthouse is next door to a convent!
