Cape Cross

Cape Cross named after the first European to set foot in Namibia, Portuguese navigator Diego Co who erected a cross here in honor of his King. A limestone replica has been erected at this spot.

Of special interest for visitors are the Cape fur seals that are to be found at Cape Cross. It is quite a desolate place unless you are a seal, in which case you would thrive on the abundant fish supply and undisturbed surroundings.

Undisturbed until both the commercial fishermen and the tourists arrived. The fishermen want to cull the 100,000 strong breeding colony of Cape Fur Seals as they consume so many fish, and the tourists want to take their pictures. Oblivious to all this, the seals take absolutely no notice and carry on fighting, bleating, swimming and sleeping. The animals live squashed closely together on the rocks along the Atlantic Ocean..
