Swakopmund has the characteristics of a German town in Namibia. Approximately 80% of the inhabitants still speak German. The climate is similar to that of central Europe. The cold Benguela current originating at the South Pole makes the coastline foggy and cool. The fog stops abruptly just 10 km inland, where the hot African sun takes over.
Swakopmund is the premier holiday resort in Namibia. During the summer holidays and long weekends thousands of Namibians flock to the coast. Many Namibians take advantage of this difference in temperature in the hot inland summer months between October and March to escape to Swakopmund. This migration happens as for example Swakopmund has a real holiday feel and everyone wants to be there.
Do not, however, expect a sea like the Caribbean. The water temperature rarely rises above that of the North Sea.
Accommodation in Swakopmund
The architecture and general feeling of Swakopmund is one which may be associated with a small German village, and the town seems to be stuck in time. Although in recent times a new generation have woken up to the tourist potential of the area Swakopmund still manages to create a feeling of timelessness.
Swakopmund is the ideal starting point for excursions and tours to Cape Cross, where thousands of seals occupy the rocky beach, or a trip along the Skeleton Coast.
