Thunderclouds over the Kalahari		The Kalahari is a flat and dry semi-desert and stretches over 1,2 million km², covering a large part of Southern Africa. It stretches from South Africa through Namibia and into Angola as well as a large part of Botswana. In the east it reaches Zimbabwe and Zambia. The best features are the pans, in which the rare rain accumulates and then evaporates soon after. A well-known example of such a pan would be the Etosha pan in Namibia.

2nd day: Sossusvlei-Sesriem

		Red dunes and dusty roads Distance: 280km Time: 5:00h

The chalets		Accommodation: A little Sossus Lodge A Little Sossus Lodge lies 35km southeast of Sesriem. It is surrounded by the Nubib, Tsaris and Naukluft mountains with views of the distant dunes in the west. In this exquisite location, you will be accommodated in simple but stylish stone chalets, built from the local occurring rock. The interiors of the chalets are luxuriously furnished and offer an en-suite bathroom. The main area of the lodge is an old farmhouse converted into a homely meeting place where you will experience a friendly and welcoming ambience. All areas are open plan inviting guests to wander around freely. On the well sheltered verandah you can enjoy your breakfast, lunch and dinner. The cozy lounge is decorated with ethnic African décor and comfortable leather sofas. Satellite TV is available as well as internet and fax/phone facilities. A swimming pool is available to guests. The dunes reach up to 400m in the Sossusvlei		Sossusvlei lies approximately 65km to the west of Sesriem in a spectacular dune landscape. The last 5km are only accessible by 4x4 vehicle or on foot. It is the outflow of the Tsauchab River into a basin, resulting in a pan that provides much needed water to gemsbok, ostrich and other game that frequent this desert. Up to 300m high dunes surround the vlei with some green vegetation within the pan. Often the water seeps away into the ground, leaving a white clay surface. Sossusvlei is a part of the Namib Naukluft Park and entry to the vlei must be arranged with the gate office.

5th day: Swakopmund

		from the desert to the coast Distance: 330km Time: 6:30h

		Accommodation: Secret Garden The guest house is situated at the heart of Swakopmund. The historic bridge and the town centre are within walking distance. The 7 double rooms with en-suite bathroom are placed around an attractive courtyard. Breakfast is included and a kitchen, a barbecue as well as safe parking and garages are available. The lighthouse in Swakopmund		Swakopmund has the characteristics of a German town. Approximately 80% of the inhabitants still speak German. The climate is similar to that of central Europe. The cold Benguela current originating at the South Pole makes the coastline foggy and cool. The fog stops abruptly just 10 km inland, where the hot African sun takes over. Many Namibians take advantage of this difference in temperature in the hot inland summer months between October and March to escape to Swakopmund. Do not, however, expect a sea like the Caribbean. The water temperature rarely rises above that of the North Sea. Swakopmund is the ideal starting point for excursions to Cape Cross, where thousands of seals occupy the rocky beach, or a trip along the Skeleton Coast.

7th day: Omaruru

		Erongo Mountains and Omaruru Distance: 220km Time: 3:00h

blending into the surroundings		Accommodation: Erongo Wilderness Lodge Ten luxury tents, built on stilts and protected by thatch roofs, are carefully fitted into the rocky landscape at the foot of the Erongo mountains. Every tent has an en-suite bath and they are so far apart that you might imagine being alone in the wilderness. The lodge is ideally situated for exploring the Erongo mountains. 		Omaruru has only a few thousand inhabitants and is known as the green centre of Namibia. The vegetation consists of lush bush as it is situated on higher ground attracting numerous species of animals. Bushmen hunted here many centuries before modern man arrived, leaving behind countless bushman paintings. The Herero Tribe grazed their livestock in this area prior to the clashes with the German colonial government. The "Francke" Tower in Omaruru bears witness to the uprising of the Herero against the German colonial Government of that time. Many hunting farms are located between Omaruru and the Etosha Pan.

8th day: Etosha Park-Süd

		Age-old Animal sanctuary Distance: 280km Time: 3:00h

		Accommodation: Okaukuejo Camp Okaukuejo is located at the southern entrance to the park. It is the best and quietest of all the Etosha camps. A waterhole in close proximity to the camp attracts game, especially in the winter months. Game can be viewed during the night as permanent floodlights illuminate the waterhole. Water holes - meeting places for animals		In Southern Africa water plays a vital role in the survival of animals. If it rains in the game reserves, water is available at most water holes and rivers and animals are able to spread out and manage to stay out of one another's way. The opposite happens in the semi-arid areas and drier months. The surface water is restricted to fewer holes and pools and attracts game from far and wide. Now animals have to interact that otherwise choose not do so. Pecking orders are exercised and tolerance of other species becomes easier as they are forced to drink side by side. The Etosha Park has many such water holes, some are located close to rest camps. Here one can easily spend as much as half a day (or night) to observe elephant mothers protecting their little ones from attacks by hyena, or zebra that are chased away by lion, etc, ...attacks by hyena, or zebra that are chased away by lion, etc, ..

10th day: Etosha Park-Ost

		Etosha Park Distance: 150km Time: 4:00h

Bush experiance close to the Etosha Park		Accommodation: A bush lodge The lodge is situated on a 7,000 hectare game reserve adjoining Etosha National Park. In order to maintain the excellent service, the owners decided to keep the facility small and exclusive. The lodge has thatched huts with en-suite bathrooms and offers excellent German cuisine. Protecting one another at a water hole		The 5,000 Km² Park is a part of the Kalahari trough, a huge inland lake area where water has nowhere to go. The Kunene River used to feed this lake but changed its course around 80,000 years ago, turning it into a salt-pan. The lake is mostly dry, unless exceptional rains occur. Temperatures are quite pleasant in the winter months between April and September but the summer months are usually extremely hot. To the south of the Pan, where the camps are situated, waterholes attract game in numbers. The park has approximately 1,500 elephants, 300 lions, black rhinos, leopards, and many antelope species. Although the park is reasonably large, its area is not adequate for the elephants, as they travel thousands of kilometres in their lifetime and keep knocking down the fences. There are plans to increase the size of the park, but as yet no specific decision has been taken.

12th day: Mount Etjo

		Scrubland und dry savannah Distance: 400km Time: 5:00h

Mount Etjo - a place of refuge		Accommodation: Mount Etjo Safari Lodge Mount Etjo Safari Lodge nestles within the Okonjati Wildlife Sanctuary, which was founded by world-renowned conservationist Jan Oelofse during the early 1970s. Here, approximately 180 km north of Windhoek in one of the most scenic parts of Namibia, you can come into close contact with nature. Hundreds of species of birds and mammals can be sighted here, including elephants, black and white rhinos, hippos, giraffes and numerous varieties of antelope ranging from the majestic Kudu to the diminutive Damaraland Dik-Dik. Predators, such as lions, leopards and cheetahs, also roam the area. Game viewing is conducted from open safari vehicles and on foot, accompanied by experienced guides. "Etjo" means place of refuge. Guests are accommodated in natural surroundings and may elect to stay in Rhino Lodge, which is more for visitors who like peace and quiet surrounded by nature, or the Main Lodge. Rooms are comfortably furnished, with en-suite bath facilities, and a number of rooms in the Main Lodge are equipped with private Jacuzzis. 		The Okonjati Game Reserve was founded in the 1970s by the famous environmentalist Jan Oelofse. It is situated in one of the most beautiful landscapes in Namibia around Mount Etjo. Game has been carefully reintroduced into the 22,000 hectares of bushland. In addition to elephants, lions, hippos, white rhinos and leopards, numerous endangered species now live in the park, including roan antelopes and sable antelopes. The lodge offers game drives in open jeeps. A UN conference held at Mount Etjo in 1989 represented a major step towards Namibian independence.

14th day: Windhoek

Lutheran Church overlooking Windhoek		The approach to the airport will give you a first impression of the vast and desolate landscape of Namibia. Windhoek itself seems more like a town than a capital city. The importance of Windhoek will be understood only on the return journey through Namibia, as the vastness and emptiness of the country becomes evident. Only then will Windhoek's status as a world city be revealed. The city is characterised by a mixture of old German colonial architecture and modern functional buildings. Places of interest include the landmark Lutheran Church (Christuskirche) and the old Germany fort built in 1890. There is yet another side to Windhoek: Kattutura ("where nobody wants to live"), a township of Windhoek. Even though it is not one of the worst slums, it is a reminder that Namibia is both a first and a third World country. This contrast will be apparent throughout the journey around the country.
