The majestic Erongo mountain range of the Brandberg massif, emerges mysteriously from the surrounding flat arid scrub land.
Brandberg with its 2574m peak of Knigstein is the highest massif in Namibia. 120 million years ago a volcano rose her out of the vast flats.
The granite massif which resists sun and weather, offered the San a refuge with its numerous overhangs. Visitors can see many paintings, the best-known of which is the "White lady", a painting which scientists linked with the Minoan culture of Kreta for a long time. Recently the view that it does not represent a lady but a medicine man, has been accepted more generally. A 5km hiking trail through a gorge will take you from the parking area to the painting |
