Lutheran Church overlooking Windhoek		The approach to the airport will give you a first impression of the vast and desolate landscape of Namibia. Windhoek itself seems more like a town than a capital city. The importance of Windhoek will be understood only on the return journey through Namibia, as the vastness and emptiness of the country becomes evident. Only then will Windhoek's status as a world city be revealed. The city is characterised by a mixture of old German colonial architecture and modern functional buildings. Places of interest include the landmark Lutheran Church (Christuskirche) and the old Germany fort built in 1890. There is yet another side to Windhoek: Kattutura ("where nobody wants to live"), a township of Windhoek. Even though it is not one of the worst slums, it is a reminder that Namibia is both a first and a third World country. This contrast will be apparent throughout the journey around the country.

2nd day: Sossusvlei-Sesriem

		Red dunes and dusty roads Distance: 400km Time: 7:00h

moon landscape		Accommodation: Sossusvlei Wilderness Camp The lodge is situated 20km from Sesriem, the entrance to the dunes of Sussusvlei. It is part of a private reserve of 20 000 hectares. The chalets are built on top of a hill and offer grandiose views. Each has its own pool. The early morning excursions by open Jeep to Sossusvlei with breakfast in the desert under a camelthorn tree are unbeatable. In the afternoon trips on the own reserve are offered. Desert animals like oryx antelopes, ostrich and springbuck can be photographed against a breathtaking background. If you take part in a night trip, you can see hyenas, desert foxes and the strange, highly specialized aardvark. The dunes reach up to 400m in the Sossusvlei		Sossusvlei lies approximately 65km to the west of Sesriem in a spectacular dune landscape. The last 5km are only accessible by 4x4 vehicle or on foot. It is the outflow of the Tsauchab River into a basin, resulting in a pan that provides much needed water to gemsbok, ostrich and other game that frequent this desert. Up to 300m high dunes surround the vlei with some green vegetation within the pan. Often the water seeps away into the ground, leaving a white clay surface. Sossusvlei is a part of the Namib Naukluft Park and entry to the vlei must be arranged with the gate office.

4th day: Namib Rand Nature Reserve

		Namib Rand Nature Park Distance: 90km Time: 1:30h

Conservency in the Desert Landscape		A businessman from Windhoek was so taken with the Namib Desert and the preservation thereof, that he decided to buy a farm at the edge of the Namib Desert. He subsequently bought surrounding farms and with the help of private investors the Namib Rand Nature Re-serve was created and now incorporates an area of 140,000 hectare. The reserve borders on the Namib Naukluft Park. Game was reintroduced and fences where taken down so that it could roam freely.

6th day: Hakosberge

The Namib		The Namib is the oldest desert in the world and stretches along the Namibian coast for approximately 1,300km and is 120km wide. The word "Namib" means "great emptiness" in the Hottentot language. The desert is split into two differing landscapes. To the north of Walvis Bay rugged cliffs and impassable terrain dominate while the south is dominated by red dunes that are constantly on the move with the wind. Summer temperatures sometimes reach 70° Celsius in this unforgiving part of Namibia. The area between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund is remarkable: the cold Benguela current causes thick fog to descend, extending about 10km inland. This fog is present for approximately 100 days per year.

7th day: Swakopmund

		from the desert to the coast Distance: 200km Time: 3:30h

The Hotel was the former Train Station		Accommodation: Swakopmund Hotel The former station is Swakopmunds premier hotel now. All rooms are en suite. A restaurant and bar are available in the hotel. Live music is played in the bar during the evenings. Camel or horse rides into the desert can be undertaken from the hotel. A desert golf course, one of only 7 desert courses in the world, is located close by as well as a swimming pool, tennis courts and two cinemas. The lighthouse in Swakopmund		Swakopmund has the characteristics of a German town. Approximately 80% of the inhabitants still speak German. The climate is similar to that of central Europe. The cold Benguela current originating at the South Pole makes the coastline foggy and cool. The fog stops abruptly just 10 km inland, where the hot African sun takes over. Many Namibians take advantage of this difference in temperature in the hot inland summer months between October and March to escape to Swakopmund. Do not, however, expect a sea like the Caribbean. The water temperature rarely rises above that of the North Sea. Swakopmund is the ideal starting point for excursions to Cape Cross, where thousands of seals occupy the rocky beach, or a trip along the Skeleton Coast.

9th day: Omaruru

		Erongo Mountains and Omaruru Distance: 220km Time: 3:00h

blending into the surroundings		Accommodation: Erongo Wilderness Lodge Ten luxury tents, built on stilts and protected by thatch roofs, are carefully fitted into the rocky landscape at the foot of the Erongo mountains. 		Omaruru has only a few thousand inhabitants and is known as the green centre of Namibia. The vegetation consists of lush bush as it is situated on higher ground attracting numerous species of animals. Bushmen hunted here many centuries before modern man arrived, leaving behind countless bushman paintings. The Herero Tribe grazed their livestock in this area prior to the clashes with the German colonial government. The "Francke" Tower in Omaruru bears witness to the uprising of the Herero against the German colonial Government of that time. Many hunting farms are located between Omaruru and the Etosha Pan.

11th day: Damaraland-Vingerklip

		Damaraland Distance: 300km Time: 3:30h

The Vingerklip		Accommodation: Vingerklip Lodge Even though part of the Vingerklip tumbled down when there was an earthquake in the early 90's, the Lodge still has a stunning view of the stone statue, which is part of the Ugab Mountain range. From the Sundowner terrace one has an exquisite panoramic view of the expanse of Damaraland. A day trip to Twyfelfontein, Burnt Mountain and the Petrified Forest is well worth it. An easy 30 min walk to the Vingerklip can also be undertaken, and other hiking trails lead out from the Lodge. The Lodge has 2 swimming pools. Many engravings and paintings can be found here		Damaraland with its capital Khorixas was initially a 48,000 km² homeland with 12,000 inhabitants. The tribe originated from central Africa and was ousted by the Hereros, who banished them to the semi-desert. The yearly rainfall decreases from 300 mm in the east to 50 mm in the west. Countless rock paintings can be viewed in Damaraland. By studying rock paintings all over Southern Africa, experts have proven that the prehistoric tribes that lived here were the San (Bushmen) and not the Bantu tribes as generally believed.

13th day: Etosha Park-Süd

		Age-old Animal sanctuary Distance: 220km Time: 2:30h

Luxuary accommodation with view over the plan		Accommodation: Ongave Game Lodge Ongava Lodge has 10 chalets which are attractively built out of brick and thatch close to the top of a hill. Each chalet has an en-suite bathroom. There is air-conditioning in the rooms and overhead fans. The rooms have glass fronted doors which lead out onto a private covered veranda overlooking the bush. The main lounge, bar and dining area are also under thatch with wonderful views across the plains and floodlit waterhole below. Outdoor dining under the stars, whilst viewing game drinking at the waterhole is something never to be forgotten. There is also a swimming pool and a large curio shop. As the lodge is built close to the top of a hill, there are several steps. If you cannot climb steps, we suggest you book into Ongava Tented Camp. Mornings are normally spent within Etosha National Park, returning to Ongava in time for a well earned lunch. After tea, guests head out onto the private reserve to enjoy more flora and fauna. Protecting one another at a water hole		The 5,000 km² park is a part of the Kalahari trough, a huge inland lake area where water has nowhere to go. The Kunene River used to feed this lake but changed its course around 80,000 years ago, turning it into a salt-pan. The lake is mostly dry, unless exceptional rains occur. Temperatures are quite pleasant in the winter months between April and September but the summer months are usually extremely hot. To the south of the Pan, where the camps are situated, waterholes attract game in numbers. The park has approximately 1,500 elephants, 300 lions, black rhinos, leopards, and many antelope species. Although the park is reasonably large, its area is not adequate for the elephants, as they travel thousands of kilometres in their lifetime and keep knocking down the fences. There are plans to increase the size of the park, but as yet no specific decision has been taken.

15th day: Okonjima

The farm runs the "Africat-Project", a project to save and sustain the big cats of Namibia. Guests have the opportunity to observe the work on this important project. Guests also have the opportunity to take close-up pictures of the big predators. Bushman Trails are available to guests where you experience a day in the life of a Bushman. Learn how they adapt and survive in an unforgiving wilderness environment. Nature Trails are also available. Enjoy a walk in the wild. Similar to the sundowner walks, the trails have been made with varying degrees of difficulty ranging from very easy to more strenuous. predators of the wild		As vast tracts of Namibia are farmland, the wild cats are in competition with the farmers. In order to avoid heavy cattle losses, farmers often have no alternative but to shoot or trap the predatory cats. The Africat Foundation is developing farming methods that will allow co-existence with these cats. In addition, young animals the parents of which have been shot are prepared for survival in the wilderness.

17th day: Windhoek
