Situated near Warkworth, only one hour north of Auckland, the Matakana Coast is an ideal overnight stop for people traveling from the Waioupa Kauri Forest or the Bay of Islands to Rotorua or the Coromandel Peninsula – or vice versa.
The subtropical region abounds with a startling array of fresh produce, from limes, avocados, herbs and persimmons to chestnuts, olives, venison and oysters, the area's visitors are spoilt for choice at a range of restaurants.
Once the "Fruitbowl of Auckland" the Matakana Coast is now also home to a flourishing wine industry. These are innovative, quality-focussed wineries, small and mostly family-owned – many offering wine-tasting. Local artists have created a diverse range of fine art & crafts, many of which are available from the artist's home studio, gallery or workshop.
Visitors can also play golf in the area, go horseback riding along the white sandy beaches, snorkel at the Marine Reserve of Goat Island, take a ferry ride to Kawau Island with its colonial Mansion House, or visit the Bohemian village of Puhoi nearby.
