Akaroa Harbour on Banks Peninsula
Akaroa Harbour on Banks Peninsula

Day Trip Suggestion: Banks Peninsula
Less than one hour's drive away from Christchurch, Banks Peninsula is the result of violent eruptions from three ancient volcanoes around 10 million years ago. The two main volcanic vents are now the harbours of Akaroa and Lyttelton. The Ngai Tahu Maori tribe had already discovered the charm of the location well before Captain Cook sighted Akaroa Harbour in the 1770s. Akaroa is the site of the only attempted settlement by the French in New Zealand. Their influence is still evident in this vibrant tourist town: French street names, quaint historic buildings and inspired cuisine. The Lyttelton's Timeball Station was built in 1876 as a timekeeper for 19th century shipping. New Zealand's rarest dolphin - the Hector's dolphin - can be seen on a wildlife cruise around both harbours. The peninsula's scenic beauty, its crater rim and the more remote bays on the edge of the peninsula are best explored on a scenic drive.

Built in 1930 this boutique guesthouse offers a unique combination of accommodation and small group guided wildlife tours. Ulva Island: predator-free sanctuary for native birds

Half-Day Trip to Ulva Island: Ulva's Guided Walk
A Stewart Island stay is not complete without a visit to Ulva Island. Located in Waka o te Wera (Paterson Inlet) with 11km of coastline, Ulva Island is a scenic gem of unsurpassed beauty; an open bird sanctuary and predator free (since 1997). Ulva Island is easily accessed by a short watertaxi ride across Paterson Inlet from Golden Bay. Under the luxuriant green mantle of podocarp forest the Ulva Island walks are rich with mosses, ferns, liverworts, filmy ferns and native orchids. Ulva Island is a sanctuary to threatened wildlife, and 30 saddleback (tieke) were released in May 2000 with 16 delightful Stewart Island Robins (toutouwai) released in October of the same year. Visitors will also hear the songs of Bellbird and Tui, their bursts of melody interspersed with raucous call of the Kaka and the chattering native parakeet Kakariki.

Ulva Goodwillie, the main guide, who is named after the Island, is a direct descendant of the first Maori peoples of Stewart Island.A highlight of her walking programme is a leisurely ramble which introduces visitors to Ulva Island's history, scenery and spectacular birdlife. Through knowledge passed down over generations, Ulva understands the traditional stories and uses of flora and fauna on Ulva Island. By also working with the Department of Conservation she has developed a thorough knowledge of the rare birdlife of Ulva Island. Tours have a maximum of 8 people and last for 3-4 hours. Walk through the ancient Podocarp forest (New Zealand native pines) with huge Rimu, Totara and Kahikatea trees wrapped in massive Rata vines. Then visit the fur seal colony at Long Reef on the wild West Coast. You may see the rare Fiordland Crested Penguin. Spend the night at Martins Bay Lodge. [Walking Distance: Approx 12kms (7miles)].

Tip: Rob Roy Glacier Track

The Rob Roy Glacier Track, in the Mount Aspiring National Park, is an exceptional day walk that takes you into the alpine zone in just a few hours. Starting from the road-end, the track follows Rob Roy Stream through beech forest with a rich understory of ferns and mosses to the tree line. Here the bush gives way to low alpine vegetation and spectacular views of the hanging glaciers beneath Mount Rob Roy. Waterfalls line the jagged cliffs and keas (alpine parrots) fly overhead. The track takes at least 4 hours (return). The gravel road into the national park which leads to the start of the track is scenic, but a little rough - and takes about 1 hour one way.

Homestay B&B in a Remote Bay
Situated in a secluded bay in a truly remote part of the Marlborough Sounds, the home of Roger & Jude can only be reached via a scenic but winding 1.5 hour long drive through bush, forest and farmland. The welcoming hosts are spoiling their guests with wonderful meals with fresh seafood, homegrown organic veggies and fruit. The two private cottages for guests are simple but comfortable, peaceful and sunny. Although remote, there are lots of things to do: Boat trips to d'Urville Island, charter boats to see the Sounds, and the mail boat from French Pass which runs once a week. Also, there is a private beach and guests can walk around the coastline and around the hills, or go out in the dinghy with their hosts to catch some fresh fish for dinner. As a special treat, all guests can enjoy a private bath outside under the sun or stars, overlooking the beach, heated by fire, prepared by Roger or Jude. This accommodation is an ideal place to take a break while travelling around the country.

Please note: The standard of accommodation is different to other accommodation we use in that although it is very comfortable, it is not luxurious. There are two simple and charming separate cottages for guests. The one close to the house has a spacious bedroom and a balcony upstairs, and a private bathroom with an eco-composting-toilet and a shower downstairs. The one below the house is nestled in the garden, overlooking the beach and the sea. It is more romantic but it has an outside eco-composting-toilet and a private bathroom in the main house. Jude & Roger treat their guests as if they were friends, which makes this place very special for many of our clients. "Lord of the Rings" stars, Orlando Bloom and Elijah Woods, have both stayed there and both loved it! However, this kind of accommodation does not suit everybody. Please let us know whether you would like us to include it into your itinerary proposal or whether prefer to stay at a more conventional place.
