The Coromandel Peninsula lies east of Auckland, on the other side of the Hauraki Gulf. A short hour and a half drive from Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga lies the Coromandel, New Zealand’s favorite destination.
Its unspoilt landscape and relaxed lifestyle make it an ideal holiday destination. Framed by native Pohutukawa trees - a red flowering native of New Zealand, on the western side, beautiful white sandy beaches on the east and divided by ranges cloaked in native rain forest, the Coromandel’s 400kms of coastline offers the visitor a truly distinctive blend of experiences.
An impressive, heavily forested mountain range runs right up the middle of this peninsula – it is bordered on each side by kilometers of spectacular coastline. Around the peninsula there is a never ending parade of lonely bays, white sand and surf beaches, coves and harbors.
The Coromandel's history is evident in gold mining relics, logging dams and ancient Maori Pa (fortified village) sites. The past can also be found in the charming colonial architecture and historical buildings, preserved in several towns around the region. Today the area has become a haven for local artists, crafts people and those seeking a relaxed lifestyle. |
