A one and a half hour drive south-east of Christchurch, Banks Peninsula is the result of violent eruptions from three ancient volcanoes around 10 million years ago. The two main volcanic vents are now the harbors of Akaroa and Lyttelton.
The Ngai Tahu Maori tribe had already discovered the charm of the location well before Captain Cook sighted Akaroa Harbour in the 1770s. The beautiful harbour dominates the landscape and is home to a variety of sea and bird life including the worlds smallest and rarest dolphin, the Hectors Dolphin. Take the opportunity to explore this unique environment with one of our local operators.
Akaroa is the site of the only attempted settlement by the French in New Zealand. Their influence is still evident in this vibrant tourist town: French street names, quaint historic buildings and inspired cuisine. The Lyttelton's Timeball Station was built in 1876 as a timekeeper for 19th century shipping.
The peninsula's scenic beauty, its crater rim and the more remote bays on the edge of the peninsula are best explored on a scenic drive. There are activities for everyone including wildlife cruises, swimming with the dolphins, boat hire and sea kayaking.
For those in search of relaxation there is nothing more satisfying than lazing on the sand as the family enjoy paddling at the safe beach. |
