Te Anau is the gateway to Milford Sound and the Fiordland National Park, which provided the backdrops of Nen Hithoel, Fangorn Forest and the Dead Marshes. If you should venture further into the deep South of the Fiordlands you will find the foothills of the Misty Mountains.
On account of their inaccessibility and extremely high rainfall the Fiordlands are nearly uninhabited. The real beauty of the area will, however, only reveal itself to the hiker. Many of the "Great Tracks of New Zealand" are found in the Fiordlands: Milford Track, which is regarded as the most beautiful hiking trail in the world, Hollyford Track, and Routeburn Walk. This largest wilderness of New Zealand has been declared a "World Heritage Site" by the United Nations. |
