Marlborough Sounds

In the northeast of South Island are the Marlborough Sounds, a unique landscape of water arms, mountain ridges and indigenous forests. The Queen Charlotte, Kenepuru and Pelorus Sounds make up the Marlborough Sounds. The deep water of the Marlborough Sounds, provides an ideal source for fresh seafood, ranging from scallops to crayfish. There is also abundant wild game available for the creation of 'inspired' dishes.

The coastal landscape was shaped by the rise of the sea level and the melting of the glaciers, submerging a number of rivers in the sea. On account of numerous water arms the Sounds can hardly be made accessible by roads and boats are therefore the main means of transport. The area is known to have the longest lasting sunshine periods and is therefore an attractive holiday destination. The best known hiking trail in the Sounds is the Queen Charlotte Sound Hiking Trail.
