Cape Reinga

Cape Reinga is the northernmost point of New Zealand – it's a two hour drive north of Kaitaia, New Zealand's northernmost town. Visitors can walk up to the lighthouse and take in expansive panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea as they merge. From this unique vantage point the famous pohutukawa tree can be seen.

Here, it is said, Maori spirits depart on their journey to their final resting place. A trip to the Cape would not be complete without visiting spectacular Ninety Mile Beach, regarded by many to be one of the best surf casting beaches in the world. At Te Paki Stream many stop to sand surf the giant sand dunes that signal access to the beach. Lucky ones may sight some of the many wild horses that live in the area. Those with time can walk along the coast to explore Cape Maria von Diemen, see the Aupouri Forest, feel the silicone sands of Rarawa Beach between their toes or take a swim at Ahipara Beach.

Cape Reinga has huge spiritual significance for Maori people, being the 'Leaping Place' where spirits of the deceased start their long journey back to the traditional homeland of 'Hawaiki.' The 800 year old pohutukawa tree on the lower rocks of the point, hides the entrance to the mythical Underworld where spirits move freely.
