Born of the gold rush in 1862, Arrowtown is a thriving, forward thinking small town with a determination to preserve the best of the past
Arrowtown was born in the gold rush township in 1862. Over the years it has matured into a modern small township of 2,000 people. For the past fifty years it was primarily a holiday town, but recent changes to the local economy have seen it become a preferred place to live for the people of the wider area.
Arrowtown is only 20 minutes drive from spectacular Queenstown. It is at the heart of the Southern Lakes ski areas, and is known for its hot summers and striking autumn foliage. Arrowtown has a number of superb cafes & restaurants. On the main street of Arrowtown, Buckingham Street you will find shops selling New Zealand's finest clothing, souvenirs, arts and crafts, gift ware, and wines.
As one of the main film sets of the Lord of the Rings the area around Lake Wakatipu heads the list. The lake is seen in the film as Lrien, the mountains at its bank are the Misty Mountains near Rivendell and some of the forests featured as Rohan. The Fords of Bruinen were close to Arrowtown and the Karwarau River simply became the Great River Anduin. Here a little imagination will also create the mighty Argonath, the Gate of the Kings. An excursion to Glenchory at the other end of Lake Wakatipu will lead you directly to Middle-earth: Isengard and Lothlrien as well as Amon Hen and Nan Curunir can be found here. |
