In the West of North Island lies what is possibly the greatest natural attraction: Mount Taranaki. Previously named Mount Egmont after the British Lord Admiral, it has now been given its original Maori name again.
At 33 000 ha the National Park is not the largest of the country by any means, but it is rare to find such variety of vegetation in combination with such a beautifully formed volcanic cone. The peak of 2518m is always covered by snow and ice. However, this is rarely visible as the peak is often covered by mist.
High rainfall occurs on the slopes, resulting in almost impenetrable vegetation in the lower reaches. Taranaki is a place to find the soulful beauty of New Zealand's heartland. Come because you seek the time and space to discover new memories; on the mountain, in the water, or exploring lush, colorful gardens and invigorating art. |
