The largest lake of New Zealand covers a number of extinct volcanic craters. Various rivers feed the lake. Its run-off is Waikato River, containing the Huka Falls that are worth seeing. The water is stunningly blue - the air fresh and unpolluted - the towns are bustling with cafes and exclusive shopping - scenic delights greet visitors at every turn.
Some of the best trout fishing in the world has international anglers flocking to the area while mighty mountain peaks draw skiers and adventurers alike to experience the pristine environment.
The very first Europeans were enchanted by the wonderful landscape surrounding the lake. Today this lake is, in contrast to neighboring Lake Rotorua, still quite placid. Its banks are developed only in the vicinity of the town of Taupo. Attractive boat trips will take you to magical carvings by young Maori artists. |
