Cambridge

Cambridge is a town in the Waikato region of the North Island of New Zealand. It is situated on the banks of the Waikato River. The town is known as "The Town of Trees". The town is now best known for its thoroughbred horse stables, which have produced many champion horses in the sports of racing and show jumping.

About a half-hour's drive southeast of Hamilton is the old English university town of Cambridge. The area surrounding this Mecca of higher education is mainly used for cattle, sheep and horse breeding. Nearby is Te Awamutu, a Maori settlement that played a major role in the land wars of the mid-19th century.

Founded by the Romans in AD 40, today Cambridge is mainly known for its university, which was formed in 1209 by students fleeing the hostile citizens of Oxford. One of the city's main attractions is King's College Chapel. The building project was initiated by King Henry VI in 1146 and completed during the reign of King Henry VIII in 1515. While most of the city's historical sites center around its colleges and universities, modern Cambridge is actually known as a center of high tech.
