The centre of Middle-earth is situated at the southern tip of North Island, around the capital of Wellington. Here are the film studios in which the studio scenes were filmed and where the special effects were created on computer.
Here, for example, the indoor shots of the dancing pony were made. The varied region around Wellington offered backdrops for many film sets. Here is the Middle-earth town of Bree (Otaki), where Aragorn met Frodo and his companions. Within sight of the much traveled State Highway 2 the Hornburg was first erected.
After filming (mostly at night) had been completed, the whole castle was taken down and re-erected, this time as the beleaguered Minas Tirith where the last decisive battle of the War of the Ring was fought. Some scenes were even filmed in the city |
