The Waterfront and Table Mountain		The city of Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula alone warrant a trip to South Africa. It is the oldest city in South Africa, commander Jan van Riebeek having landed at Cape Town in 1652. From there the Boers migrated further into the country. In 1814 the Dutch East India Company ceded the land to the British Crown. The British influence increased from then on, and today Cape Town is probably the most liberal city in South Africa. This is where the abolishment of apartheid began. You will probably not find a more beautiful setting for any city in the world. Overlooking the city is Table Mountain, a flat-topped mountain often covered with a tablecloth of clouds. To the east the vineyards produce wines of world-class quality, and at the southern point, known as the Cape of Good Hope, a nature conservation area protects the fauna and flora. There one can take secluded walking trails which provide a view of both oceans. Bathers are advised to swim in the warmer waters of the Mozambique current on the eastern side, which is approximately 2° warmer than the Atlantic Ocean with its current stemming from the Antarctic.

4th day: West Coast NP-Langebaan

Fisherman's hut along the west coast		The reserve was created to protect the ecosystem of the west coast of South Africa. Cape cormorants, oyster catchers and countless other species of birds share this swamp region. There are a number of ways to explore the park. Walking trails are in place and boat trips are available, but best of all is by canoe. Canoe trips with guides are offered every day.

6th day: Namaqualand-Springbok

Greates flower show on earth		At first, the Namaqualand region seems desolate and hostile towards mankind. Precipitation per annum is less than 50mm. Only Bushmen lived in this area prior to the middle of the 19th century. Crops such as tobacco, citrus fruit, rooibos tea and grapes for wine can be cultivated only under irrigation in the south near Citrusdal. Undoubtedly the main attraction of the Namaqualand unfolds in spring between August and October, after rain has fallen. The semi-desert transforms into a blanket of flowers that covers the otherwise barren landscape. The best areas for viewing this spectacle of wild flowers are along the N7 route leading to Springbok, and the Goegab Nature Reserve. The Springbok area is, however, a fascinating landscape throughout the year. Slowly wend your way north along the N7 towards Springbok, taking minor roads on both sides of the highway. This is a great way to travel through the Namaqualand region. Please remember to take enough to drink and have sufficient petrol in the tank.

7th day: Fish River Canyon

The Cañon Village has a fully equipped restaurant with a magnificent view of the granite boulders that throw deep shadows over the vast Canyon landscape. Fish River Canyon		Besides the Grand Canyon, the Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world. It is approximately 161km long, 30km wide and 550m deep. Centuries ago, the canyon must have carried a huge amount of water to erode it to this extent. Today the Fish River is a small stream drying up in winter except for a few water holes. The main viewpoint is accessible from the D324. Make time to hike down into the canyon (minimum time: approximately 2 hours return trip). A 3 to 5 day hiking trail winds through the Fish River Canyon starting at the main viewpoint and ending at Ai Ais. The trail has no fixed overnight camps and is closed in the hot summer months because of the extreme heat in the canyon. Ai Ais affords you the possibility to bathe in hot springs.

9th day: Lüderitz

		towards Luderitz Distance: 350km Time: 4:30h

Accommodation with a difference		Accommodation: Klein Aus Vista The Huib plateau reaches out of the Namib Desert to form small peaks above the surrounding landscape. Rooms are built into these mountainous outcrops similar to those of the stone ages, almost like eagles' nests. Excursions to Lüderitz can be undertaken from here. The owners have exclusive rights to the southern part of the Namib Naukluft Park and carry out excursions with 4x4 vehicles to view the wild horses, roaming here since 100 years ago. The feral horses in the desert near Aus		This town in a bay along the stormy sea of the Atlantic Ocean was one of the first places where Europeans looked for shelter in Namibia. The town was named after a German from Bremen who bought the bay and surrounding farms for 250 guns and 600 British pounds. One year later, Bismarck declared the area a part of the German Reich, which started the colonization of Southwest Africa. In the beginning, the town did not play much of a part in the economy, on account of its remoteness. This, however, changed instantly when diamonds were found 15km inland at Kolmanskop. Unfortunately for the town the industrial boom lasted for a few years only when the diamond mining company moved to Oranjemund where diamond mining was more profitable. The town centre has a few well restored buildings in art deco of Wilhelmian style.

11th day: Sossusvlei-Sesriem

		Red dunes and dusty roads Distance: 380km Time: 6:00h

It is surrounded by the Nubib, Tsaris and Naukluft mountains with views of the distant dunes in the west. In this exquisite location, you will be accommodated in simple but stylish stone chalets, built from the local occurring rock. The interiors of the chalets are luxuriously furnished and offer an en-suite bathroom. The main area of the lodge is an old farmhouse converted into a homely meeting place where you will experience a friendly and welcoming ambience. The dunes reach up to 400m in the Sossusvlei		Sossusvlei lies approximately 65km to the west of Sesriem in a spectacular dune landscape. The last 5km are only accessible by 4x4 vehicle or on foot. It is the outflow of the Tsauchab River into a basin, resulting in a pan that provides much needed water to gemsbok, ostrich and other game that frequent this desert. Up to 300m high dunes surround the vlei with some green vegetation within the pan. Often the water seeps away into the ground, leaving a white clay surface. Sossusvlei is a part of the Namib Naukluft Park and entry to the vlei must be arranged with the gate office.

13th day: Swakopmund

		from the desert to the coast Distance: 330km Time: 6:30h

Spacious garden and friendly service		Accommodation: A Swiss guesthouse This guesthouse, which has won several awards, offers a mixture of Swiss hotel tradition and Namibian hospitality. The inn offers a great view over the pleasant little town to the Atlantic sea. Guests can relax in the sitting room with its small library. The lighthouse in Swakopmund		Swakopmund has the characteristics of a German town. Approximately 80% of the inhabitants still speak German. The climate is similar to that of central Europe. The cold Benguela current originating at the South Pole makes the coastline foggy and cool. The fog stops abruptly just 10 km inland, where the hot African sun takes over. Many Namibians take advantage of this difference in temperature in the hot inland summer months between October and March to escape to Swakopmund. Do not, however, expect a sea like the Caribbean. The water temperature rarely rises above that of the North Sea. Swakopmund is the ideal starting point for excursions to Cape Cross, where thousands of seals occupy the rocky beach, or a trip along the Skeleton Coast.

15th day: Omaruru

		Erongo Mountains and Omaruru Distance: 220km Time: 3:00h

Game Lodge near Omaruru		Accommodation: A privately owned game reserve The lodge is situated in the "green heart of Namibia" and replicates a typical African village. Guests are accommodated in round thatched huts with en-suite bathroom and air-conditioning. A swimming pool, lookout tower and viewpoints at five waterholes offer many interesting activities. The private park has almost all the species of antelope that naturally occur in southern Africa as well as elephants, giraffes, cheetahs, leopards and hippos. 		Omaruru has only a few thousand inhabitants and is known as the green centre of Namibia. The vegetation consists of lush bush as it is situated on higher ground attracting numerous species of animals. Bushmen hunted here many centuries before modern man arrived, leaving behind countless bushman paintings. The Herero Tribe grazed their livestock in this area prior to the clashes with the German colonial government. The "Francke" Tower in Omaruru bears witness to the uprising of the Herero against the German colonial Government of that time. Many hunting farms are located between Omaruru and the Etosha Pan.

17th day: Etosha Park-Süd

		Age-old Animal sanctuary Distance: 280km Time: 3:00h

		Accommodation: Okaukuejo Camp Okaukuejo is located at the southern entrance to the park. It is the best and quietest of all the Etosha camps. A waterhole in close proximity to the camp attracts game, especially in the winter months. Game can be viewed during the night as permanent floodlights illuminate the waterhole. Protecting one another at a water hole		The 5,000 km² park is a part of the Kalahari trough, a huge inland lake area where water has nowhere to go. The Kunene River used to feed this lake but changed its course around 80,000 years ago, turning it into a salt-pan. The lake is mostly dry, unless exceptional rains occur. Temperatures are quite pleasant in the winter months between April and September but the summer months are usually extremely hot. To the south of the Pan, where the camps are situated, waterholes attract game in numbers. The park has approximately 1,500 elephants, 300 lions, black rhinos, leopards, and many antelope species. Although the park is reasonably large, its area is not adequate for the elephants, as they travel thousands of kilometres in their lifetime and keep knocking down the fences. There are plans to increase the size of the park, but as yet no specific decision has been taken. The entrance fees have to be payed on the gate per car N$10.- , per person and day N$80.- (in 2008)

19th day: Waterberg

		North Central Namibia Distance: 260km Time: 3:30h

A room with a view		Accommodation: Waterberg Plateau Lodge Waterberg Plateau Lodge is a new lodge on the Rust farm, close to the Waterberg Wilderness Lodge. Three chalets are available at present, with another two to follow. The chalets are secluded, providing one with an experience of "being at one with the bush". The lodge is situated on the slope of the mountain, slightly below the plateau, with a breathtaking view. Each chalet consists of a double bedroom en suite, and the octagonal layout is spacious. The walls are constructed of roughly hewn, red sandstone rocks. A cast-iron stove warms the chalet during chilly winter nights. Breakfasts and dinners are at present provided at the Waterberg Wilderness Lodge and guests are transferred for these occasions. The Rust farm has a long and interesting history. The San (Bushmen) inhabited this area before being driven away by the OvaHerero. In 1851 the Swedish explorer Charles John Andersson visited the area and in 1871 missionary Carl Hugo Hahn visited the spring on the farm. In 1904 one of the battles between Herero and Germans was waged at the valley's mouth. In 1911 the land came into the possession of the Rust family's ancestors. It was bought by Friedrich von Flotow, a grandson of the German composer and great-grandfather of Joachim Rust. Friedrich's son took over in 1952, but he died childless in 1971, and his widow sold the farm. Twenty-nine years later, Joachim and Caroline Rust bought the farm and established Waterberg Wilderness Lodge, the Rust family's original lodge on the farm. Waterberg - table mountain on the edge of the Kalahari		The Waterberg plateau reflects a red glow during sunsets that can be observed from many kilometres away. It is the most important sanctuary for endangered animals in Namibia. White and black rhino, buffalo and shy antelope species roam on top of the nearly inaccessible plateau of the mountain. 200 bird species and a great variety of reptiles and amphibians are also part of this biosphere of Waterberg. Game drives are offered, but the best way to discover the area is on foot. A network of walking trails is laid out, offering an opportunity to take short walks or up to 3-day hikes across this huge plateau. A cemetery is situated at the foot of the mountain with numerous graves of soldiers, killed during the clashes between the Herero tribe and the German army. The Hereros fled to the north-eastern area of Namibia, a very arid part of the country.

20th day: Windhoek

		Namibia's Capital Distance: 320km Time: 4:00h

Hotel Heinitzburg - a Relais et Chateaux Hotel		Accommodation: A fort overlooking Windhoek Built in 1914, the fort was commissioned by Count Schwerin for his wife to be, Margarethe von Heinitz. Today the fort is a hotel with a beautiful view of Windhoek. Only a two minute drive from the centre of the city, it offers a combination of 19th century charm and modern comforts. In 1996 a new wing was added in the same style as the old fort with 16 beautiful en-suite rooms. The rooms are comfortable and luxurious with 4-poster beds, Italian ceramic tiles and hand-made furniture. The kitchen is renowned for its excellent cuisine. Lutheran Church overlooking Windhoek		The approach to the airport will give you a first impression of the vast and desolate landscape of Namibia. Windhoek itself seems more like a town than a capital city. The importance of Windhoek will be understood only on the return journey through Namibia, as the vastness and emptiness of the country becomes evident. Only then will Windhoek's status as a world city be revealed. The city is characterised by a mixture of old German colonial architecture and modern functional buildings. Places of interest include the landmark Lutheran Church (Christuskirche) and the old Germany fort built in 1890. There is yet another side to Windhoek: Kattutura ("where nobody wants to live"), a township of Windhoek. Even though it is not one of the worst slums, it is a reminder that Namibia is both a first and a third World country. This contrast will be apparent throughout the journey around the country.
