Hogsback

Hogsback is perched on the very edge of the dramatic Amatola Mountains, surrounded by indigenous forests and pine plantations. The little town is like the stuff fairytales are made of. It is no wonder that so many people are married in unique St Patrick's chapel on the hill. In winter, Hogsback is often blanketed with snow and that's when it's time to enjoy a roaring log fire, or a brisk walk in the clear, bracing air. Hogsback is an enchanting, tranquil place which begs one to explore. Seasonal changes are spectacular and the beautiful spring gardens deserve special mention.

This is nature-lover's territory. The majestic, mysterious Amatola Mountains set the scene for one of the Eastern Capes most dramatic tourist routes, stretching from Adelaide in the east to Stutterheim in the west and are outdoor adventure country. The entire area is steeped in history; colonial history with its forts and battlefields, Xhosa history and the history of the struggle for democracy in South Africa.

Experience the walking the recently completed Labyrinth in Hogsback. The pattern is based on the Labyrinth in the Chartres Cathedral in France. It is an eleven circuit labyrinth with a 29m diameter, and 700 meters of pathway, the inward and outward path measuring a total of 1.4 kilometres, probably making it one of the largest in the world! It is awesomely situated close to the edge of the cliff, with spectacular views, beautiful sunsets, swirling mists and clouds. Definitely worth a visit!

High clear mountain air, thick blankets of snow in winter and summer's warm sunny days, make this a great destination at every time of the year.
