The park was founded in 1937 in the Eastern Cape when only 6 Mountain Zebra remained in the region to save the animals from extinction. They are common only in the Cape Province. In the interim the number of these zebra, close relatives to the common zebra have increased to over 300. The park is now in a position to distribute some of the mountain zebra to other nature reserves. The craggy heights of the Mountain Zebra National Park's Bankberg embrace rolling plains and deep valleys.
Numerous antelope species and wildebeest as well as the caracal, which is a seldom sighted night prowler, and also the Cape buffalo and black rhinos are present in the park. Summers become exceedingly hot and snow falls occasionally in winter. |
